Heeeeyy! It's me again!! I know I post these chapters infrequently but it's cuz I'm in an advanced class (not to brag I promise!) that just LOVES to give homework... So yeah you see that problem there. Anyway, I wanted a quick disclaimer. I did use an actual book and movie called 'The Giver' that I have read and figured it was good enough to put into the story! I do NOT own the book or the movie or anything about it but I do recommend you read it! And I also DON'T own the artwork that I put into the picture thingy above!! Credit goes to their rightful owners!! Alright! Imma shut up now so you can read the story!! Enjoy!!☺️
'Who on Earth is she? And when did she even get here?' Marco kept thinking as he looked at fairly attractive blonde that had come in earlier. Marco couldn't see much of her since the movie was playing in the dark room. All he knew was that she was next to Oskar and he noticed Oskar kept glancing at the girl as she obediently wrote down her notes. 'Weird... Oskar's never really been into girls so she must seem pretty cool.' Marco thought as the movie began rolling credits.
He squinted his eyes as the bright lights of the classroom came on and Marco was finally able to get a decent picture of the girl. She wore her long, blonde hair in a ponytail but she still had some cute bangs in the front, and she wore a scarlet bow as her ponytail holder. She also wore a light blue dress that had kind of poofy sleeves and a few purple crystals stitched into the bodice above the top of the skirt.
Marco turned his attention away from the girl as Mr. Breach stood from his desk, still looking like he needed sleep, despite the hour-long nap. "Now class," Mr. Breach stated as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "Can anyone tell me what they thought the significance of memory in the video was?" He asked, referring to the movie shown, The Giver, was talked about. Marco leaned back in his seat, not really caring that he hadn't payed attention to the movie.
Marco saw the new girl raise her hand almost immediately after the question was asked.
"Yes, Miss Butterfly?" Mr. Breach asked with a wide grin. He wasn't used to kids actually answering his questions.
The girl smiled back demurely and spoke softly, "Well, the society as a whole considered memories as unimportant because they were striving for a utopian world. A perfect world where no one misbehaved or was mistreated, but at the cost of individualism, freedom, and memory. And, because no one ever truly had memories, the people considered memories to be a menace to their perfect society." She girl finished her answer with a nervous smile. She gripped her hands tightly as the class stared in silence at her.
Marco stared at the blonde, who proved in under a minute that the whole dumb-blonde stereotype that had been mostly true at the school to be. Dead. Wrong. For her at least. Most of the school's blondes contributed to that stereotype almost TOO well.
The entire class was awestruck by her completely intelligent and reasonable answer. Even Mr. Breach who had been teaching at Echo Creek Academy for almost 18 years. The girl started playing with the ends of her hair as Mr. Breach shook his head to clear off the astonishment and actually speak.
"Why yes, Miss Butterfly! You are most certainly correct!" Mr. Breach reached up and touched his head, as if checking for a serious bump. "The people were afraid that memories would contribute to an imperfect society which is the opposite of what they wanted, so they discarded all memories onto one person in the civilization. Which is known as The Giver to them. And as John Ruskin stated 'To banish imperfection is to destroy expression, to check exertion, to paralyze vitality,' it has been proved true." Mr. Breach finished proudly. He was happy to have actually spoken about the actual lesson for once.
Marco was amazed that the girl was able to get the question right and how she had only just gotten here. 'How did she know that?' He wondered still shocked but no longer showing it as Mr. Breach moved onto handing out a worksheet for homework. 'Seriously, if this girl managed to give the right answer on something she barely knew on her FIRST DAY, she's gonna become the teacher's new pet!!' Marco thought with a slight grimace. Marco was the teacher's favorite in almost every class on account of his intelligence. It wasn't because of his respect for the teachers at all. Mr. Breach was a great teacher and so he had Marco's respect but he was pretty much the only one.
Marco frowned at the girl as she politely thanked a boy who was passing out the worksheets for homework. The boy blushed slightly as she smiled at him and he nodded nervously. Marco didn't want this extremely intelligent girl who was obviously very respectful of authority figures to steal his place. Her intelligence paired with her politeness would easily take Marco's place as teacher's favorite and that could NOT happen. He was very smart but he lacked dedication to his work, therefore he often got bad grades but managed to smooth talk his teachers into giving him make-up tests that he would then pass with flying colors. That was his plan. To fail then impress them by seemingly understanding it over night. And it worked.
Marco vowed that this girl would NOT take his place if it was the last thing he ever did. If it did happen, the teachers wouldn't give him make-up tests and his grades would start to go down.
Marco picked up his backpack of binders and folders and started on his way to gym before he heard Mr. Breach call him back. "Mr. Diaz. Won't you stay for a moment please?" Mr. Breach asked and Marco turned around with a sigh.
Marco turned and saw the new girl standing at Mr. Breach's desk, looking impassive but showing nervousness in her somewhat dull blue-bell eyes. She gave a shy, closed mouth smile to Marco and he saw strange heart markings on her cheeks. 'That's kinda... Weird..' Marco thought as he walked over to the desk.
"Mr. Diaz, this is Star Butterfly. She just today transferred to this school from another...country..." He said that slowly, as if trying to believe it as well. Marco raised a brow at this but Mr. Breach continued. "So, Miss Butterfly needs help getting from class to class and I figured who better than you? You're so attentive and focused so I thought you'd be perfect for the job." Mr. Breach gave Marco a look that conveyed that he knew Marci had fallen asleep in class. 'Nothin' gets past this guy does it?' Marco thought with a roll of his eyes.
"So Mr. Diaz, think you can handle it?" Mr. Breach nodded with a grin to Star. Marco just grunted and nodded. Mr. Breach nodded and said "Very good! Now, here's Miss Butterfly's schedule and you show her to her classes. Understood?" Marco nodded and mumbled a 'yes' before looking Star's schedule.
