The six teenagers got comfortable in their living room, taking advantage of their parents being out of the house for the evening.
Liam playfully tackled Niall onto the couch, the blue-eyed boy grimaced — placing a hand over his knee.
"It's been a month, your knee still hasn't healed?" Niall rolled his eyes at the question, propping his leg up against the couch cushion.
"Come on lads, focus. Y/N's trying to speak." Louis recalled his brothers' attention, and they all turned their heads towards their sister.
"We've implemented these family talks for a while now and I think it's time we have a conversation about how mom and dad have affected us."
Y/N glanced around the room, her brothers fiddled with their thumbs — all waiting for someone to speak up.
"I'll go first..." Harry broke the silence, clearing his throat to continue, "I have these uncontrollable fits of rage where I just want to hurt people...where I want to use force to get my point across."
"We can all tell Harry, you've always had a damn temper. You're always getting into fights-" Louis interrupted his brother and Harry felt his temper get the best of him once more.
"Alright, Louis! Well you've got a paranoia of someone getting hurt. You play doctor but you're not one, haven't you noticed?" Louis' eyes widened at Harry's remark, his shoulders rose up to the sides of his face, he had never thought about it before. Now that Harry brought it up, he understood the truth behind his words. Not a single day went by where he didn't worry about his siblings or his mother getting hurt. He had a constant fear of not being able to help, of not being able to save them.
"Ermm...sometimes-" Zayn's voice cracked in between words, his sister gave him an endearing look, urging him to continue. "Sometimes, I feel like running away... I want to go somewhere new and reinvent myself. I want to have a normal childhood-"
"That's selfish of you." Liam shut down Zayn's feelings. How could his brother want to leave them behind? He couldn't understand it. They were all suffering together, and he was the only one who thought of leaving. How could he even dare to admit that?
"Fuck you, Liam! You bury your head in the sand, you're hardly ever here!" Zayn snapped back, he wasn't going to let Liam make him feel invalid. Not when his brother dissociated himself from the truth.
"You read your stupid books or kick your soccer ball around for ages, your mind is always wandering. You're selfish for not wanting to face reality." Zayn tugged at his hair, grasping a handful of it to contain his anger. Liam gulped roughly, coming to a mutual understanding behind Zayn's eagerness to leave. Just like he lost himself in stories and games, Zayn wanted to pick up and genuinely get away from the situation. It was completely understandable. Who wouldn't want to get away from all the toxicity?
"Relax, we're all having a conversation." Niall spoke in a monotone manner, putting one hand on Liam's chest and the other on Zayn's. He sat between them, attempting to intervene in their argument.
"Don't you get me started! Stop trying to play peacemaker all the time! Don't you ever get tired?" Liam smacked Niall's hand away from him, hoping to enrage his brother but Niall simply huffed and folded his arms.
"Enough! The point is we've all got problems that won't go away until we get away from dad."
"It's not only dad! Can't you fucking see?" Niall unfolded his arms, getting up to his feet. Y/N's words triggered something within him. He didn't view his mother as a victim. How could he? When all she did was put her feelings in front of theirs. "It's mom too! She doesn't-she doesn't love us. She keeps going back to him — no matter what. She has us, aren't her kids enough?"
