Chapter 6

The girls soon had to leave, and a month passed before I saw them again.

This time it was my birthday, and I was surprised Lin and Vanessa remembered. None of my other foster families had. Though, this is the longest I'd been in one home.

The entire cast plus most of the group home came to the party. I couldn't quit smiling.

"JAELYN!" a tiny voice suddenly shouted.

I turned and saw Talia pushing her way through the crowd of people frantically.

I smiled, kneeling down opening my arms.

Talia ran into them and I embraced the small girl.

"I've missed you!" she said into my shoulder as I lifted her off the ground.

"I've missed you too! It hasn't been the same without my little Shadow," I said and she giggled, raising her head.

She wouldn't let me put her down the rest of the party.

"Present time!" Lin shouted suddenly and everyone cheered. "You guys didn't have to get me anything. This party is amazing as it is," I said as Vanessa 'guided' me to a chair.

"Of course we had to get you something! It's not every day a girl turns 16!" she said, making me smile. Talia sat on one of my legs and Sebastian on the other.

Talia and Sebastian 'helped' me open the presents, which were all very sweet and thoughtful.

"Oh wait, there's one more!" Lin said after I'd finished.

My smile turned into a confused one as I was given a gift box.

"Alright you two, you know the drill," I said and the toddlers on my lap began to tear into it when Vanessa said, "Actually Jaelyn, I think you should open this one."

The toddlers climbed off of me and I slowly opened the present, confused.

A few papers were inside the gift box.

"What're these?" I asked, looking from them to Lin and Vanessa.

"Adoption papers," Lin said.

I nearly fell out of my chair.

"Wh-what?" I gasped.

"We want you to become a permanent member of the family," Lin said softly, smiling.

I looked from couple standing before me to the papers, mouth shaped in an oval. "What do you say, Jae?" Vanessa asked quietly.

"Thank you! Thank you so much!" I said, jumping up and throwing my arms around Lin and Vanessa.

The crowd of my friends cheered and I realized I was crying happy tears.

"Thank you! Thank you!" I cried.

Lin laughed and he and Vanessa hugged me.

The rest of the day you couldn't wipe that smile off my face for nothing.
