Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
The constant infuriating sound that was drumming into Connor's head was slowly driving him mad. It was occupied with the smell of fresh sheets of paper and ink, and many bodies running in and out of the rooms, all of which just reminded Connor of where he was. The principle's office.
Well, not quite yet. Connor had been waiting since eight in the morning for his name to be called into the office. It had been now eleven, three hours since his arrival. His patience was being fondled with and he was sure break at any given moment. However, the only thing that kept him in his seat was his mother's voice echoing through his mind.
"If you don't get your grades up, we're sending you to live with grandma and her sister in Scotland."
Connor shivered evidently at the thought of having to redo his final year of school whilst living with two old broads who did not believe in technology. Not even a radio. Their idea of 'fun' was reading books which was not something Connor enjoyed doing in his spare time.
Connor couldn't stay back another year. Not when Keith, his best friend, would be graduated and parting every single night along with their other friend Mia. Connor would never hear the end of it.
He sighed and sunk down lower into his hard wooden chair. His body was struck with a craving, not for food but for a cigarette. He tapped twice at the pocket of his black skinny jeans just to double check he bought them with him. When he felt the solid square shaped box underneath the fabric, he relaxed.
"Mr Delenski?" Connor snapped out of his terrible thoughts and looked up from where he sat. A woman with precisely cut short blonde hair and coral coloured lipstick stared down at him with a warm smile. She did not look like a principle, well at least not like the stereotypical principle. Instead of wearing a grey suit and glasses, she wore a tight navy dress covered up with a white kimono.
"Uh, yeah... That's me." Connor jumbled, suddenly feeling nervous about being in the presence of someone he must try to convince to give him another chance.
"Right this way, please." She stepped to the side of the door that she appeared from, and Connor stood up, shoving his hands in his jean pockets. He gripped his cigarette packet in one hand as he followed her into the office that had an even more stronger scent. It was a nice smell though, kind of like a vanilla scented candle and it helped ease Connor's nerves a little.
"Take a seat." She gestured to another wooden chair in front of the dark mahogany desk, before walking around to sit in her own chair. "Sorry to keep you waiting for so long, it's been a hectic morning." Connor watched her pick up her white mug with a pink and blue owl print on it, sipping what appeared to be coffee.
Inside, Connor wanted to ask her why she scheduled the meeting for so early even though she knew she would be busy, but outside he smiled respectfully and waved his hand in the air in dismissal.
"That's alright. It didn't feel like much of a long wait, anyway." He lied.
The principle smiled at him and placed her mug back down next to a cream coloured folder in front of her. Connor eyed the document, seeing his own photo ID on the corner of the page.
"Right, so as you must already know, you're at a high risk of being expelled from the school due to poor grades and equally poor behaviour." She began, picking up the paper in her hand and tilting her head upwards as she stared down. "Smoking indoors, not bothering to try in classes at all, calling one of the teachers an... Embarrassing old bitch and the gym teacher a-" She stopped reading out loud and by the look on her face, Connor knew that she did not know anything about him prior to their meeting.
