“I don't want to go back in.” Arrow told Jill flatly, crossing his bone-like arms across his chest. He looked at her like a disobedient child would their mother; though his expression was more I hate you than I'm not sorry.

“Harry, it's time to go back inside.” She said to him, her voice soft and understanding. I knew it wasn't real concern. I knew. They're fake; all of them.

Arrow never looked anyone straight in the eyes, really. No matter the situation, he never made eye contact. Occasionally, he would sometimes look at you for a few seconds or so, but that was rare for him (as I had observed).

He stared at her; not in a way that you could really pick up as a regard, but in a way that you could tell his eyes were on her. Not on her face, or her eyes, but he was focused on her and it was apparent.

He held his slouched posture (as usual), and hid his face from others. None of this was abnormal, no, but the way he was acting seemed to be a little peculiar. He was depressingly discouraged, more than he normally was.

It honestly bothered me that the staff here had the right to deprive him and all the others of something that was visually making them happier. Aren’t we here to get better? Are we not here to be happy? So why do they give themselves the rights to remove our source of happiness from us?

“He doesn’t want to go inside, can’t you see that?” I said, stepping into a conversation I clearly was not involved in. I didn’t care.

“Atlas, this is none of your concern.” Jill said.

“It’s of my concern if it concerns me, Jillian.”

Arrow looked up at me like I was a stranger standing up for him in a fight. I wasn’t able to tell if he was happy or disappointed that I was on his side. His pale green eyes were as dull as they could ever be but I could’ve sworn I saw a sparkle somewhere when he looked at me.

I looked over at him to see if he was going to say something to Jill, but he kept quiet. Anything he would’ve wanted to say was being said with the hateful look he was directing towards Jillian.

“Ms. Beaudelaire,” Jill said. “Please return inside and join the rest of the group. I will deal with Harry.”

Arrow seemed to microscopically cringe at the sound of his real name. I was tempted to tell Jill to not call him that, but that would only lead to more things to argue about. I looked her directly in the eyes and narrowed my own.

“I don’t want to go inside.” I said flatly, crossing my arms and mimicking Arrow. I watched the smallest of amused smirks lift one side of his mouth. He quickly masked it with the scowl he had been wearing.

“You are going to go inside whether you’d like to or not.” Jill said firmly.

“You. don’t. own. me.” I seethed at her, stepping forwards. To my surprise, she stepped back, but always held the same condescending expression on her face.

“I am in charge of you, Atlas. You are the minor here, I am the major. You will follow all orders given.”

I scoffed and looked away as she continued to blabber bullshit into my ears. I ignored her words and instead looked over at Arrow who was shuffling his feet in the snow absentmindedly, picking at the porcelain skin on his arms with his chewed fingernails.

“Atlas, you will listen to me when I am talking to you.” Jillian said, tightly grabbing a hold of my arm. I wrenched it away from her roughly.

“Don’t touch her.” Arrow said immediately, his voice colder than the snow he had dug his toes into.

Jill and I both turned our heads to look at him; I didn’t think he would have ever spoken up during the argument. He glared at her hand that was raised in midair after having let go of my arm. His sunken eyes followed it as she lowered it down to her side and the flickered up to her face. He clenched his jaw.

His eyes then latched onto mine. I watched his chapped lips mouth the words “are you alright?” I nodded my head in response to him, discretely enough so Jill didn’t notice. He didn’t seem relieved one bit.

“Did she hurt you?” He mouthed mutely once again.

I shook my head no, trying to reassure him that I was alright. He still had a worried look in his eyes; a dreading look. It took a lot in me not to take him by his brittle shoulders and look him in the eyes to let him know I was okay and that I was alright.

I heard Jillian take in a deep breath through her nose and exhale slowly. She held her hands together in front of her and straightened her posture, bringing her shoulders back.

“Atlas, Harry… are you two ready to go back in now?” She asked us, reluctance wavering in her voice.

Arrow and I shared a glance, and without saying one more word to Jillian, we stepped right past her and through the metal doors, into the hospital. I didn’t bother holding the door open for her; after all, I was only a minor.
