V I T R E O U S – S I X T E E N
Chatter. It’s the first thing she hears as she walks into the room. The nurses and psyches are all standing around with either cups of coffee or muffins in their hands. Some are sitting at the table talking, some writing, some on their phones. She could hear a few discussing their patients and their progression, which never seemed to be positive. However when she walked into the room, all heads turned towards her.
She dismisses it, continuing her walk towards the back of the room where Jillian, a nurse, and Pamela – or Pam, as she normally insists – the head psychiatrist of the entire department were talking. Pamela was in charge of anything that would ever concern the department whatsoever.
The stress of her job was portrayed in her physique; greying blond hair and tired eyes went with her wherever she went. Although she was hardly fifty, fine lines and wrinkles were scattered all over her face due to the unthinkable amount of stress and pressure she subdued every day to keep the department up and running.
Naomi approached them; Pamela lifted her head up, glowing hazel eyes, and smiled. When Jillian noticed her, she did the same although her smile was much less heartfelt than Pamela’s ever was.
“Pamela,” Naomi started.
“Pam. You’ve known me for ten years, Naomi.” She said, her voice soft. She was always soft.
“Sorry, Pam,” she corrected herself. “But I need to ask a favor of you.”
Pam scrunched her eyebrows together gently, enhancing the lines between them. “Of course, what is it?”
Naomi looked at Jillian, who was distracted in other things, and then looked around to make sure no one was listening. She kept her voice low when she spoke: “I was wondering if I could switch two patient’s rooms.”
“Speak up, sweetheart. I didn’t quite get that.” Pam said.
Naomi sighed as Jillian decided to immerse herself into the conversation.
“I was wondering, would I be able to switch a patient into another room?”
“Why would you need to do that?” Jillian interjected coldly.
“Jillian,” Pam said calmly, switching her gaze over to her. “This isn’t of your concern.”
“My apologies.” She said as she turned around to join some nurses at the table.
“Sorry,” Pam brought her delicate gaze back to Naomi. “Did you say you wanted to switch a patient’s room?”
“Yes.”
“Which patient?”
“Um,” she bit her lip. “Oh, Harry. Harry…”
“Styles? Critical ED patient?”
“He’s quite more than just a critical ED patient, but yes. Him.”
Pam nodded slowly, thinking. “How has he been doing?”
“He’s been okay…”
“He hasn’t been doing well?”
“No well, I don’t – this is why I want to switch him. Look, his progress is all ups and downs but he’s been with another patient lately, and… and I think she’s doing something.”
“What do you mean?” Pam immediately sounded concerned.
“Not something bad,” Naomi assured quickly. “Something good. She’s helping him, Pam. I want to switch him into her room.”
“You know we don’t allow boys and girls to share rooms.”
Some of the nurses were eavesdropping in on the conversation, intrigued and tilting their heads in as Pam’s voice got slightly louder than before. Naomi ignored them and pushed her argument further.
“You need to make an exception for these two. Please.”
“How is she helping him?”
“Well she – I don’t know how, she…”
“Spit it out.”
Naomi took in a deep breath, drawing her shoulders back. “She got him to eat.”
