"Why do I fall for the girls I can't have?"
Sirius stared shamelessly after the girl, watching her walk away, trying so hard to commit her figure to memory. A laugh from beside him broke his concentration, causing him to turn and glare at the culprit, a shaggy dark haired boy is with square thick rimmed glasses. James Potter, his best friend.
"What's so funny Prongs?" Sirius stated, glaring slightly at the other boy who was clutching onto his sides in pain as his laughs wracked his body.
"You-you were staring af-after her like a-a lovesick puppy!" He doubled over again in a new wave of laughter before calming down enough to get out his next sentence. "You are in love Padfoot! You're in love with (Y/N)!"
Sirius' eyes softened a little as they looked down the street for the girl. '(Y/N)? How beautiful and fitting for a girl like that.' He looked over to James again, his eyes setting themselves into a glare at the sight of James sat on the floor clutching his sides, tears of laughter streaming down his face.
"I don't know what you're on about Prongs. There is no way I'm 'in love' with this (Y/N) girl. And if I was I don't see why it's so funny."
James sent him a smile, took the hand offered to him and stood up, clapping Sirius on the shoulder. "Well you see Padfoot, the (Y/L/N)'s are quite close to my family. I've known (Y/N) ever since we were kids." He paused and started to count on his fingers. "So I've known her for about 15 years, since we were 1 and well she is completely out of your league!"
A small laugh left Sirius' lips. "No one is out of my league James. No one!"
With a small smile, Sirius looked down the street again, something still bugging his mind. "Hey Prongs? Why haven't we seen her around school?"
James smiled and began to walk back to his house, calling the answer from over his shoulder. "She goes to the French school for pretty girls!"
"Damnit!"

The new school year came around sooner than expected and just like every year Sirius Black and James Potter made their way to King's Cross Station and onto the crimson train taking them to their second home, Hogwarts.
When the two boys finally found an empty compartment, it wasn't long till they were joined by the other two Marauders, tall lanky Remus Lupin and the smaller pudgier Peter Pettigrew. The four friends spoke and messed about the whole trip, James making sure Sirius didn't forget the fact that he had stared shamelessly after (Y/N) and that the other two had the whole scene engraved into their heads with maybe a few exaggerations in certain places.
"He was drooling as he watched her walk away. Looked like a little lost puppy. So cute!"
"Shut up James! I wasn't drooling."
The other two boys started to laugh as Sirius pulled a sulky face which soon lit up again as they pulled into the station that would lead them to the horseless carriages and then to Hogwarts. Excitedly the boys started to pack up their stuff, still arguing about whether SIrius had drooled or not.
Remus smiled as he tucked his book into his messenger bag and stood, smiling down at the long haired boy sat opposite him. "Padfoot I hate to break it to you but you did start drooling when Prongs was describing her."
A low playful growl left Sirius' throat as he got up and started to chase the sandy haired boy out of the compartment and off the train, all four of them laughing.

The trip up to the castle was the same as it had always been, James running off as soon as he spotted the ginger clever clogs, Lily Evans, only to come back disappointed, setting the boys onto a whole other conversation. They were still talking and messing around when they entered the hall, James and Sirius linking their arms around the other two, dragging them to the best seats to see the sorting, and only then did they quieten down.
They were the loudest to cheer for the new Gryffindors and the loudest to boo for the new Slytherins. When all the first years had been sorted, Sirius turned back to the table and stared longingly at his plate. Hogwarts food was almost as good as Mrs Potter's cooking which was a huge compliment to both the school and James' mother. However the food didn't come, instead an announcement was made.
"This year we have a new student joining the 6th years from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. I hope you will give her a warm welcome." The Headmaster smiled and beckoned the student out from the shadows.
Sirius half expected the girl to shuffle nervously up the middle aisle as she had hundreds of eyes watching her, only to be completely wrong. She walked with confidence, her head held high, her (h/c) locks flowing behind her, entrancing everyone watching her. Breaking his eyes away from her, Sirius looked over to James, the look of shock on his face matching his own.
"What is she doing here?"
"No clue Pads. Not a bloody clue."
Both boys turned their attention back to the stool where (Y/N) now sat, the sorting hat upon her head, her legs crossed over one another in a lady like fashion but her tie hanging loosely from her neck and her top buttons undone. She seemed to be in a hushed conversation with the hat, a cheeky smile covering her lips. Butterflies were swimming around in Sirius' stomach as he prayed for her to be put in Gryffindor, it would give him a chance to talk to her, a chance to sort out the muddled feeling in his head.

(Y/N)'s eyes scanned the pupils sat in front of her as the hat went through each of the attributes she had that would place her in each house. As she looked towards the Gryffindor table she noticed James staring at her slack jawed. She sent him a friendly smile before focusing back on the hat.
'You have many great traits but the ones that stand out the most are your cunning and ambition. You are unlike the others in your house in may ways. You succeed where they fail and I believe you will bring some well need new thoughts into that house'
Smirking, she took the hat off and placed it on the stool, sending a smile at the teachers as the hat called out her house.
"SLYTHERIN!"

Sirius felt like someone had just punched him in the gut, then ripped his organs out and force fed them back to him. The feast had started but he had not touched any of it, just sat there, staring at the wall in front of him. He felt so sick. Maybe James was right. Maybe he was in love with (Y/N) and that was why he felt so torn by her being put into Slytherin, the house he swore he would have nothing to do with, the house he swore he would be the complete opposite of.
He left the feast early, only to meet (Y/N) out in the corridor, her once plane robes now bearing the silver and green colours of the serpent house. She sent him a smile which made butterflies swarm in his stomach, however, he ignored it and walked past her. He was always stubborn and stuck by his views even if it killed him.

James found Sirius sat by the fire in the common room later that night, just staring mindlessly into the flames. Sitting down next to his best friend, he noticed the pain in his eyes. Placing a hand on Sirius' shoulder, James tried to console his friend. He had no idea how much (Y/N) had meant to Sirius only after seeing her a few times.
"Why Prongs? Why?"
Looking at Sirius with confusion written over his face, James saw the single tear slip out his eye. "I don't understand Padfoot."
Sirius buried his face in his hands and pulled his legs up to his chest. "Why do I fall for the girls I can't have?"
