"Why do I fall for the girls I can't have?" - Part 2

The weeks merged into one long reoccurring nightmare for Sirius as the year dragged on. He was haunted by her figure walking through the corridors, plagued by her laugh and tortured by the idea that she could never be his.

"Why did she have to be Slytherin James?"

Sirius looked up at his best friend as he lay on James' lap, making the other boy put down his snitch and look down at the hurt puppy dog eyes belonging to Sirius. Remus shook his head from his seat on a nearby armchair.

"Are you still hung up over that fact Padfoot? She isn't a bad person so her house shouldn't matter that much."

An audible gasp resonated from James and Sirius' sofa as Sirius sat upright quicker than Remus had ever seen him move, other than when they were running away from a prank.

"How could you say that Remus? Slytherin are my sworn enemy. I vowed that I would have nothing to do with that house because of my family. I've stopped talking to my brother and by Merlin's beard I won't break my promise for some beautiful woman who happens to have stolen my whole heart and my full attention!"

There was a break of silence before the snickering started. Sirius slumped back against the red sofa, defeated. There was no way he could get over (Y/N). She was just so perfect for him so he either had to let go of his pride or suffer a life of torment and pain watching her from the side lines.

Halloween was creeping closer and and the thrum of excitement was becoming unbearable for the teachers. McGonagall was at her wits end at the number of older year students turning their transfiguration lessons into opportunities to practice transforming body parts for Halloween costumes, most of which ending in a trip to Madam Pomfrey. Using these distractions in class, the Marauders were planning their own Halloween costumes for the annual ball.

"Come on Moony, it will be hilarious if you went as a werewolf!"

"Shut up Prongs! I'm not going as a werewolf."

Sirius laughed along as his friends joked by his mind was elsewhere. That elsewhere being thinking about (Y/N) and what her costume would be. Would she go for the normal slutty witch or devil? Is she that type of girl? Or would she be more creative with her work? Lost in thought, he didn't notice the other three males look at him with concern.

"Hey Padfoot. I heard about what (Y/N) is going as and I thought of the perfect counter costume."

Sirius' head turned so fast that James thought he was going to snap his neck. He laughed a little bit before he noticed how craven Sirius was. James' eyebrows raised before he spoke up.

"Wow you must really want to impress her or something."

"NO- I mean I just want to have a better costume than her. It's not like I want to impress her or stand out or anything. Definitely not thinking about going as a couples costume even though we aren't together."

An eruption of laughter followed Sirius' flustered babble. Remus was trying to hide his laugh behind his book but the glee in his eyes gave it away. Peter was trying not to choke on the chocolate frog he had previously shoved in his gob to stop the laughter and James wasn't even trying to hide it anymore. After the boys had calmed down a bit, Remus spoke up.

"She's going as Medusa and the rest of us thought you could go as Perseus."

"YEAH! Slay the floor and steal her heart rather than her head!"

James' enthusiasm left all four boys in fits of giggles, plans forming in their minds as each thought about how to set Sirius up with (Y/N).

The night Halloween Ball had finally rolled around and the boys were getting ready into their costumes. Remus, after much hassling from the others, was dressed up as a sheep because then he was a "wolf in sheep's clothing". Peter had dressed up as a dementor and as much as he insisted he was scary, the less spooky he got. James had dressed up as Frankenstein's monster because Lilly wanted to go as the Bride of Frankenstein. Finally Sirius was dressed in Greek armour, his hair slicked back and a helmet tucked under his arm. All the Gryffindors were highly impressed with his outfit, many of the girls swooning over him and his muscles in the armour, however, Sirius' thought was on one person and one person only.

As they walked down to the Great Hall, Sirius felt his heart jumping up into his throat. He was so nervous to see how (Y/N) looked and whether she was sticking with the costume that his friends had said she was going as. Taking a deep breath, Sirius pushed open the doors to the Great Hall and his friends trailed in behind him. Students of all different year groups were milling around all dressed accordingly to the Halloween theme. There was even a first year running around as a little Hagrid. Sirius noticed all these different costumes as his eyes were scanning the crowd trying to find (Y/N) and he was so fixated on this task he didn't hear the person walk up behind him.

The hiss in his ear caused Sirius to almost jump of of his skin. Turning around, he came face to face with the beautiful (Y/N) only she had definitely changed. Her usual (h/c) locks had been transfigured into green wriggling snakes that hissed and her skin now had green scales covering parts of it. Instead of her usual school robes she was dressed in a beautiful green silk gown that flowed down to the ground and out behind her. Sirius was stunned to say the least and couldn't stop staring.

"So you are Perseus? A good choice. Just don't cut off my head, I kind of need it."

(Y/N) smiled widely at her comment, before she dropped it a little after there was no reply from Sirius, who was still in shock at how beautiful she looked. Deciding to still try and make conversation, (Y/N) tried another approach. An approach which would stun Sirius into talking.

"Don't tell me I've turned the man I love into stone. Damn this curse!"

"Wow wait what?"

"I think you heard me Sirius. And I'm not just saying that just to get your attention. I know you like me, James isn't very good at keeping his mouth shut, Remus just wants to see you happy and Peter is very easily bribed with chocolate."

Sirius stared at (Y/N) blankly before looking towards his friends and glaring. Of course they would go behind his back and talk to her about him. However, he wasn't angry instead he was very happy.

"They are idiots, but I'm glad I can call them friends. What they said is true. I do really like you and I'd love to get to know you more than just stories that James has told me."

(Y/N) smiled again stepping closer to Sirius, her hand reaching out to his. She looked up deep into his eyes as she squeezed his hand slightly.

"And I'd love to get to know you better. This is an unusual pairing but I hope we can make it work."

A/N: This is the first one shot I have written in exactly a year tomorrow (October 28th 2017 was my last update) so I just want to apologise for the super long delay on this book. I was really struggling with life last year, however, I am much better now and I have gained my will to write again so there may be a few more updates on their way. Thank you so much for reading and supporting me.
