Luke glanced up from his food. He studied the brown hair girl that sat only a few tables away. He missed her. He missed being able to tell her everything. Looking at her made his stomach turn with guilt.

**

"Are you fucking kidding me?"

"You think this is my fault?"

"Yes, Luke!"

Luke stumbled backwards as Elizabeth pushed him. They were in her bedroom, in an empty house. He had come back home as a surprise for her birthday, thinking they could go back to how it was before. It had been a year since they last saw each other face to face and a lot had changed.

"You know how bad she's hurt me," she stepped back, moving against the wall to distance herself from him. "You show up out of nowhere and drop this on me?"

"Oh, I'm sorry for surprising you for your birthday Eliza! I've been away for a year, you never say anything about what she has been doing recently to you when we talk," Luke had just started texting Skylar within the past few months. He didn't let her know or she would do her best to change is mind. "She's actually not a bad person."

Liz glared at him, wrapping her arms around herself. "I didn't think my best friend would do this to me. She bullied me Luke! It got worse after you left because she was jealous of us."

He scoffed. "Please. She wasn't jealous of us, we aren't even together."

"You need to leave."

"What? I just go- "

"Leave, Luke." he tensed at how harsh she spoke. Luke grabbed his phone before leaving her bedroom.

Luke had tried to text her shortly after but none of the messages went through.

Elizabeth ignored the first few texts before she blocked him.

"Mate," Calum nudged his arm, bringing him back to present day. He glanced around and noticed that people were leaving for their next class. "We're going to be late." Calum got up and grabbed his bag, waiting for Luke.

The rest of the day seemed to go by fast. Luke went to football practice after classes, making sure to avoid the cross county team. Knowing that Liz would be there.

They still hadn't spoke. A month in and they managed not to say one word during English whenever their group would meet.

**

Liz had left her practice early due to having to go to the daycare even earier than normal to pick up her little brother. She pushed open the door and was met with a crying toddler and a worried adult.

"Eliza! I am so sorry that I had to cut your practice early. Marc won't quiet down. I think he's getting sick." Nina handed Marcus over, along with his bag.

"No worries Nina, thank you. I'll let mum know and keep an eye on his temperature till she gets home." she smiled and said their goodbyes. Liz did not drive so she had to carry her brother, his bag and her own bag a good three miles. Eventually she let Marcus walk and hold his own bag. They were passing the gated community when she saw the familiar blond with Calum who happened to be smoking. She rolled her eyes and went to look away when Marcus tugged on her arm.

" 'lizbet, why are they behind bars?" he pointed towards them. Calum noticed them and gave a small wave to Marc. Luke wore a confused look.

"Because they're rich. It's not the type of bars that you're thinking of," she glanced towards them as they walked out of the gates and onto the sidewalk, only a few feet away. He nodded but he wasn't focused on her. His eyes widen as he pulled from her grip and ran towards Calum, who was putting out his cigarette. "Marcus!"

Wide eyed, he pointed at the bird tattoo on his arm. "Is that real?!" he leaned up on his toes to get a better look. Calum chuckled softly and knelt down for him to have a better look.

"It is buddy. I got it for my sister." Marcus took ahold of his arm with one hand and traced the bird with his other hand. He was completely in his own little world.

"I'm sorry Calum. He's not feeling well and he's all over the place." Liz sat her bag down, trying to ignore Luke who was putting two and two together.

Calum smiled up at her, "It's alright. I'd kill to have a little brother. Especially this small." He ruffled Marc's hair, who giggled and let go of his arm.

"Oh." Luke breathed out, causing everyone to look at him.

"You alright mate?" Calum stood up as Marcus went back to Liz.

"Oh, yeah. Um, I just remembered what I was doing wrong during practice." Luke glanced away from Liz.

Marcus tugged on Calum's shirt. "My dad told me I could get one when I was older. He can't take me anymore though. Maybe I'll get a bird for him!" Liz flinched slightly. Their dad had passed last year due to a complication during surgery. Marcus didn't mind talking about it, but then again he wasn't really sure where their dad had went.

Luke noticed her change of mood as she picked up her bag, fixing her brothers on his back.

Calum smiled sadly, "You can get whatever you like. Just make sure it's not something you'll regret later on."

"Alright, let's get going before it gets dark." Marcus nodded and waved goodbye. Liz gave them a quick smile and said goodbye as well. She took his hand and they turned around, starting to walk away.

"Elizabeth?"

She froze. Did he just say her name? They hadn't spoke since he moved back, why start now? Slowly she turned her head to look at him. "Yeah?"

Luke was watching her carefully. Calum was already walking the opposite way, in the direction towards the town. "I'm sorry about your dad." He looked so calm but his voice was caked with hurt. Hurt from not really knowing what had happened. Hurt from not being there for her when she needed him.

"Thank you."
