The previous night was one of the worst in the entirety of my life. I could never have imagined such betrayal would stem from someone who, I thought, loved me so, and whom I loved in return.

Alas, here so lies the remains of my shattered heart. For when I knocked on the door, none other than her husband answered it. Hark! How the angels sing with pity for my soul! She, having found another man, has yet besmirched me. It was not the good man's fault. Him being unaware of my very existence, he apologized profusely for having stolen my fair lady.

My father ought to be morose when I tell him, all he wanted was for me to marry a woman before he grows old. I am nearly thirty years of age and have yet to be married. I collect a fair income, live in the New World, and even still, no woman will have me.

I have brought shame to my family. My elder brother was married at the ripe age of twenty-three years. His woman was beautiful, and she brought him many children. I still have not married, no children, nothing for my father to boast about to his wealthy fellows. I do not even have money to show for myself, I have spent all of my past incomes on the trip to see my Adelaide. Oh dear, I believe I cannot call such a beautiful lady 'mine' anymore, now that she has been married off.

Not a problem, thought I. I shall return back to the New World, where I will resume my previous work for Mister Valencia, who surely could not deny. No wise man would turn away an extra hand. I will simply show up at his home and request that he pay my debts and immediately put me to work. What conscious man would abhor that?

I will buy a ticket back to the New World tomorrow, Mister Valencia shall pay for it. When I get back to Boston, I will give him the ticket and politely ask him to pay for it. I will have a month to do this, so it shall be no problem. Even if he does not agree, why not another man? I will travel back to the New World, find work and a woman, marry her, and make Father happy again. I will be able to live the rest of my life in peace, thank the Lord.
