I did as my uncle instructed, walked up the stone steps and turned left. I came to a long corridor and stopped at the first door I came to on the left. It was a tall, white-wood door with a silver knocker hanging in the mouth of a snake. I rapped the knocker loudly on the door and it opened very slowly.
A pair of grey eyes peeked around the corner, followed by a sharp pale face and long white curls. I recognized her face from somewhere. Of course, I'd sat next to this girl in the Great Hall, although I had completely ignored her. She probably didn't think much of me at all. To my surprise, she grinned at me and stuck her hand out for me to shake.
"Radia Snape, is it? Oh, I'm so glad you're going to be staying in our dormitory; I'd rather hoped you would be! Get us in Professor Snape's good books!" the girl joked in a strong Welsh accent, shaking my hand thoroughly as she did so. I chuckled at her and attempted to wriggle my way out of her firm grip.
"How very kind of you, Miss, erm..." I said.
"Oh, sorry, I haven't introduced myself! Silly me! I'm Foxface, Zarah Foxface" she said. I hadn't known her long, but I liked Zarah; she didn't fit my idea of a stereotypical Slytherin at all. In fact, she seemed rather lovely.
"Good to meet you then, Zarah. Could I come in?" I asked her. Zarah chortled at herself for forgetting that I was going to be staying here too and opened the door slightly wider so I could come in. However, before I could, she stopped me and leaned in to whisper something in my ear.
"About the other girls, I should probably warn you. They're a bit...well... a bit catty and stuck up and sometimes quite frightening. They'll probably try to wind you up, but don't let them. It does no one any favours" she informed me. My heart fell, but I nodded, smiling reassuringly at her. Zarah opened the door further and I stepped inside.
The room was rather beautiful actually, but was not unlike the rest of the Slytherin part of the castle. Five ancient four-poster beds were laid out around the room with green silk hangings and bedspreads embroidered with silver thread. Medieval tapestries depicting the adventures of famous Slytherins covered the walls and silver lanterns hung from the ceilings, making the room shine with a silvery glow. Zarah shut the large door behind us, the sound echoing throughout the room and she scooted behind me to stand to my right.
"Girls, this is Radia Snape. She's new and is moving in here with us" she announced.
Three girls, each on a separate bed that were all next to each other, looked up at me, each face displaying a snooty grimace. All three girls stood up and strutted over to the door where Zarah and I were stood and they looked fixedly at me, like a pack of wolves checking out a sheep to see if it was fat enough for them all to share. There was one girl who was further forward than the other two; she had a pig-like nose and short, thin hair the same color as her small, squinted tawny eyes. She was not an attractive girl. The other two behind her with identically shaped faces were far prettier than this other girl. Both had wavy blonde hair in two pigtails flowing past their slight, white but red blushing faces. They both had striking blue eyes and red lips that were far too big for their faces. I didn't like the look of any of these girls, they were intimidating. They crossed their arms almost in sync with each other and the pig-like girl smiled at me sarcastically.
"Oh, your surname is Snape! How funny, I never knew Professor Snape had a daughter!" she cackled, her voice shrill and scathing. The two girls behind her smirked at each other.
"He doesn't. I'm his niece, actually" I corrected her. She pouted at me.
"Oh, poor you! I thought so, I mean, he's not exactly the paternal type!" she said. I felt like that was a dig at me, but I ignored it. "Close, are you?" she asked. I shrugged.
"Not really your business, is it?" I said. The two girls behind her stood in awe at what I'd just said and the girl's smile dropped. I got the feeling that people didn't tend to speak to her like that. She dropped her arms from her non-existent chest and walked towards me, getting so close to my face I could smell her lemony breath, a weird and sharp smell that I did not like at all.
"What makes you think that you can talk to me like that?"
"I didn't, I just..."
"No one talks to me like that. Never speak to me like that again and we could be alright. But don't think you're going to be accepted into Slytherin with an attitude like that. I more or less control this house because I can get people anywhere and anything. Now, with you on my side, the niece of an important professor, head of our house, that will make you very popular and me even more so. So just sit up, shut up and do as I say. Got it?" she threatened me.
I looked over at Zarah, her ghostly eyes wide and nodding at me like a bobble head, urging me to go along with whatever this girl said. I shook my head at her. No, I refused to be coward and I refused to obey this nasty bitch who was just being horrible to me because I stood up for myself!
"No, I don't 'get it'. Anyway, I think I'll get myself settled in before I start making friends with anyone, especially with cows like you" I replied calmly. Zarah snorted and the girl flicked her head to the side to glare at her, her pig nostrils flaring. The two girls behind her looked utterly stunned. I wished I felt proud and clever, but I was so tense that my shoulders hunched over.
"Come on, girls. Let's go to the washroom and let Snape get...settled in" she ordered, shoving into my shoulder as she strutted past me, the other girls quick at her heels.
