Emma had rushed to throw some decent clothes on right before her friends pulled into the driveway. We hopped into the back of the van like vehicle, no one sitting in the back. She took this opportunity reach for my hand and put her head into the crook of my neck. We sat like this for the whole drive u to the ice skating rink.
Once we got into the rink area, buying our skates and her friends hurrying out onto the ice, I pulled her to edge by the wall to help her get her balance till she was use to standing on blades of metal.
"Colten I don't think I can do this, I can barely stand."
"Nonsense, just hold onto me, I won't let you fall."
She takes one of my shoulders in each hand as I hold her by the waist, letting her get use to standing on the ice. I let go of her waist and quickly take her hands to help her stay up, then we slowly take a step, then another until we are moving not to fast but enough to get around. We do this for a solid twenty minutes till we decide to take a break
"Look at you, came in here not even knowing how to skate and now you are keeping up with me, i'm a pretty good teacher if I say so myself.
"Well maybe I can teach you something."
"Oh and what might that be."
She pulls me close to her making me have to lean over to keep from falling, and kisses me. I could feel the warmth of it despite the chill throughout the large room the rink was in. It was as if a blanket had been taken off, and I kissed her back for what seemed like ages as time stood still for us, yet lasting a mere minute.
We went back skating meeting up with her friends, who we hadn't seen much since we got there. After skating we all heading back to the vehicle to go home, a long drive that Emma sleep thought, huddled up against me with my jacket laying on top of her. As we near her house I wake her up, noticing the peaceful look on her face while she slept. We stumble out the side of the van closing the door behind us and telling her friends goodnight and thanks for letting me come along, then come stumbling into the front door. The chimes sounding only once, one in the morning
"Mom! Colten and I made it home, we're going to get some sleep."
Molly comes from around the corner ready to give us a lecture for being out so late till she see the complete exhaustion on our faces.
"Alright... Get some sleep, goodnight I love you guys."
"Goodnight, love you too mom." Emma says as she heads for the stairs
Without think I say something that I had told myself not to say, that I should put that kind of pressure onto her.
"Night mom, love you too."
She noticed what I had said. I look at her like I had just told her something that I shouldnt of, well, thats because thats exactly what I had done. I expect her to say something like 'Its all right, you didn't mean to', or, 'Don't think anything about it'. But what she says brings a tear to my eye.
"Goodnight son, sleep tight."
I run up the stairs and head to my room knowing that she sees me as one of her own kids, Emma's friends had not only brought her home, they brought me home. I start to my room but a hand grabs my shirt pulling me into a side room, Emma's room.
"Will you sleep with me, it's too cold to be sleeping alone." Emma asks exaggerating about how cold it actually was.
"I don't see why I couldn't" I say pushing the thought of what I said downstairs to the back of my mind.
"Goodnight Colten, I love you."
"Goodnight Emma, I love you too."
We lay there cuddled up in a large warm blanket together, forgetting anything but two of us and slowly fell into a deep blissful sleep.
