Prologue
The old man was dying. To some, this was one of the best things in the world that could happen. But to the two boys that knelt beside his deathbed, it was heartbreaking. One, the elder, was dark haired, like his father, and had the most chilling grey eyes. He couldn't have been older than nineteen. The other was smaller, shaggier, and was sobbing quietly into his hands. His dirty blonde hair fell into his eyes, no matter how often he pushed it aside. He was roughly sixteen.
"Stop your whimpering, boy," the old man's voice rasped, "You both still have too much to do for foolish feelings,"
The younger boy ceased his sobbing at once, glad for once that he did not receive the customary punch from his older brother for being weak..
The old man turned to the older boy, "Arswon, I'm leaving it up to you to continue my mission. I want you to kill all of those unnatural beasts, and promptly please so that I may gloat over them in the Otherworld. I cannot give you much to help you to succeed, and what I can will come at a high price,"
"I can handle it, Father," Arswon said, his eyes bright.
"Then know this," the old man wagged a finger at Arswon, "What I have taught you about feelings will become particularly true for you. Should you fall in love, which you will undoubtedly do at some point, you will die. Heed my words!" the old man said at Arswon's disgusted expression, "All of us have at one weak point. The trouble is finding it, and squashing it. If you wish me to, I will make you immortal,"
Arswon's eyes grew brighter, "Oh, yes Father. That would be great,"
The old man murmured something, and Arswon shone with light. It vanished quickly, and the old man's skin became more drawn.
"Now leave me in peace, Arswon, while I speak with Brian," the old man's voice wavered slightly. Arswon bowed to the dying man and left the room.
The old man turned to the younger boy, "I can give you the same opportunity, Brian. If you wish it,"
Brian looked up from his hands, slightly afraid. He had learned to never trust a gift from his father, as there was typically a catch, "I don't want to live forever; just age slower. And I don't want to be as vulnerable as Arswon is to my feelings," he said quickly.
The old man nodded, "You have listened. Very wise. Fine; you may age slower, but you will forget all memories of before the spell. Fair enough?"
Brian nodded. He too glowed as his brother had, but slightly duller. Brian crumpled to the floor as his mind erased every one of his memories.
The old man died then, very much aware that his accursed brother, Pablo, would be celebrating his death with cheers like, "The tyrant Fernando is gone for good," but he would have no idea what hit him. He had every confidence that his sons would secede in their mission.
At that same moment, two prophecies were proclaimed about three girls who would defeat Arswon and Brian. This is their story.
