Chapter 5: Truth and Escape
Arswon cursed himself a thousand times over. He cursed his weak heart, for speeding up whenever he saw Cassidy. He cursed himself for being a coward, too afraid of the rejection that was sure to come to tell her.
She would never feel the same way. She'd already proven that many times. Arswon loved her more than anyone could ever understand. But he knew deep down that it would never happen, and the sooner she was out of the way and out of his mind, the sooner he could find Atlantis.
But he wondered if when the time came, if he would have the strength to kill her.
Cassidy slammed against the door of the cell again and again, trying to take out her aggression. As soon as Markus had come with Lindsey, Arswon had hit her in the back of the head, knocking her out. Next thing she knew, she was locked up in a cold stone room, alone. The only time she ever saw anyone, was when they came to give her her meals, and even then they scampered away like frightened rabbits.
She had seen no sign of Rose or Lindsey since they had been kidnapped. She was out of her mind with worry over her friends and she ached for the chance to give Arswon a piece of her mind.
The door of her prison cell opened a crack, and a figure was shoved in. It took Cassidy a minute to recognize the boy, but when she did-
"Brian, I swear to God if you take one step closer, I will rip your head off," Cassidy said in a deathly quiet voice.
"Please, just listen to me. I-," Brian pleaded.
"Give me one good reason why I should,"
"I'll do better; I'll give you two. One, Arswon is my brother, and since we have no parents, I kind of had to listen to him. And two-,"
"Wait a minute, Arswon is your brother?!" Cassidy asked dubiously.
Brian nodded, "He's a lot older; fifteen years older I think but-,"
"How long have you been around!? My grandma knew Arswon, and she's like seventy!"
"That's not possible. Arswon told me that my parents died shortly after I was born, and that even though I was too young to remember them, he did very clearly,"
"Brian, I think Arswon is using you,"
Brian shook his head vigorously, "He would never do that. My brother wouldn't hurt a fly,"
Cassidy refrained from commenting, "Well, anyway, what was your second reason why I should listen to you?"
"Because Arswon says that if you don't show him where Atlantis is, he'll kill Rose,"
Cassidy swore under her breath, "But I don't even know where Atlantis is! How am I supposed to tell him, assuming that I would?"
"Don't ask me! Ask him, when you see him,"
Cassidy's blood chilled, "What do you mean 'when I see him'? What's he gonna do? Call me? Let him try, the only place I'm going is back to the Triangle," she struggled to keep her voice calm.
"Without Rose or Lindsey?"
Cassidy sighed, "You know what Brian, maybe you should just come clean and tell me why you came in the first place,"
Brian averted his eyes and mumbled something.
"Couldn't hear you,"
He looked up, eyes shining with tears. Cassidy felt a tug on her heart, as she remembered that day, not so long ago, when the two of them had gone on their first, and only, date. She remembered how happy she'd been and how when she learned of Brian's betrayal, how her heart had felt empty, almost hollow.
