Several minutes passed, until Sans finally stopped his tears. Several more minutes were lost as he tried to convince himself to stand. He failed. There was no reason to get up, and keep moving. Everything he cared about had been violently ripped away from him, and thrown to the crows.
All of his determination was gone. He watched it drift away on an unseen breeze, fluttering as it left, almost as if waving goodbye. He would wave back, but he didn't have a reason to move anymore. He didn't have a purpose to exist any longer.
"Hello?" A voice said suddenly, sounding slightly panicked. "Hello, is anyone there?"
Sans sat bolt upright, and pressed the side of his head to the door. The voice was silent for a long time, and he almost believed he had imagined it, but then it piped up again.
"Please, tell me someone's there!" It said through what sounded like a sob.
There was no mistaking it. It was Toriel's voice.
"Oh my god, Toriel, I'm here!" He sobbed, forgetting temporarily that she didn't remember him.
That thought hit him like a bullet, though, when she asked, "Who are you? How do you know me?"
"I..." He trailed off, staring into space, as he contemplated what to say. "... Sorry... You don't know me, huh? I'm just... A nobody."
"Well, whoever you are, I need help!"
Those words caught his attention quickly. Help...? His protective side began kicking in, but he tried to push any thoughts away. He had to listen carefully for Toriel's voice. He had forgotten how hard it was to hear through the door.
"There's a human down here... They haven't done anything wrong yet... But they..." She trailed off to steady her breathing. "They have a strange look in their eyes, as if they can see right through you, right to your soul-"
"Demon eyes." Sans interrupted accidentally, but he couldn't help it.
"I'm sorry... What did you say?"
She didn't understand who he was referring to, but that was okay. He knew exactly who was at fault for this mess, and he was going to bring it to an end.
"Nothing. Don't worry. I'm just-" he stopped himself from saying, I'm glad you're okay.
She didn't remember him. She wouldn't understand. He knew that well enough, but still...
"Not to be blunt, but... Who are you?" Toriel asked from the other side, her tone politely curious.
He cleared his throat, and averted his eyes from the direction of her voice, as he murmured, "Nobody."
"Why, that's not true! Everybody is a somebody. What's your name?"
"My name... It's Sans. Sans the skeleton. Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you, as well! My name is Toriel, and I am the caretaker of the ruins."
He knew that. He'd heard that phrase of her's at least ten times over. He knew who she was, only too well. But... She didn't know him at all. A sudden scream broke the silence, and Sans knew only too well whose scream it was.
"Toriel?!" He called, but there was no response. He clumsily pulled himself to his feet, and attempted to twist the doorknob, but it was stuck fast. Through the haze of fear beginning to cloud his mind, he desperately tried to think of a solution. He would have teleported, but he could only go places that he knew well.
He pounded his fists on the door, as he screamed, "Open the door!"
The air was filled with an eerie silence, only broken by the sound of shattered sobs. The voice in his head was screeching at him to end it already, end the pain, the false hope, the lies. End everything. But before he could gather himself enough to teleport, a loud clicking sound could be heard. Sans looked up through eyes full of blurry tears.
With a tremulous hand, he pushed on the big, wooden door. It swung open silently. He immediately noticed the figure of someone standing above something larger. The smaller thing began to move, so Sans hid behind the door to keep from being caught. Heavy breathing. Uneven footsteps. Quiet muttering. Footsteps again. And then there was dust. It drifted out of the ruins in clouds, billowing out like smoke from a campfire.
Sans listened nervously until the noise fades back into the ruins, and then abandoned his hiding place behind the door, and entered a place that one could only describe as terrifying. There were cobwebs, suggesting the ruins were home to spiders, but more than that, there was more dust. It was layered so thickly on the floor, that taking a step left a footprint.
Sans' eyes landed on the same large object as before, and to his horror, it let out a soft moan of pain. He ran over to it, afraid of what he was going to find. He should have known who it would be. Deep down, he already knew it was her. But... He had been denying it until he saw it with his own eyes.
