I woke up to a cool wash cloth on my forehead trying to combat the lava in my head. I let out a low groan and tried to sit up.

Owwww...

A wave of nausea rushed to meet me and I nearly retched.  Someone, the nurse I think, pushed me back down.

A million questions swirled in my head, most that I couldn't ask. So I choose the most important one of the lot: "Whaaaa?" I asked, my words slurring because of my sore jaw.

The nurse chuckled.

I scowled at the shadowy figure besides my stiff school bed. Suddenly the figure came into view.

The nurse was middle aged, with streaks of gray in the chocolate brown hair. She looked to be in her late 40s. She had a kind expression that was permanently etched on her face.

"On a scale of one to ten, how bad does this hurt?" She said gently prodding a lump on my jaw. Searing pain flared there.

"7." I said because I didn't want to be a weenie.

She raised an eyebrow but didn't question my answer.

"How about here?" She asked poking my nose. A dull pain that I hadn't noticed erupted. I grunted.

"6ish." I said.

The nurse nodded and wrote down something on a clipboard.

My eyes wandered around the space that held me captive. It was relatively small, with a counter and sink, then a cabinet above that. The room was painted a gentle baby blue. I was laying on a squishy red cot covered with paper. A thin blanket covered me.  I craned my head. Next to my cot was a door leading to a tiny bathroom.

The air was heavy with awkward silence. The nurse felt content, but I felt like an impolite idoit not thanking her.

"Umm... thank you." I said awkwardly.

It was like someone put a warm, glowing ember in my chest. I felt elated. The nurse was glad.

"Thank you, Mr. Davidson." She said

"Your welcome..." I trailed off, realizing I didn't know her name.

"Ms. Perry." She said shaking me head. I nodded then tried to sit up again. Nausea over took me and I gaged.

Ms. Perry pushed me down again. "I think you need to rest for a little while."

I tried to hold back an eye roll.

"I think you might need go home if the nausea doesn't pass soon you need to go home."

I sat up so fast I saw stars. Vomit crawled up my throat.

"Woah, there cowboy. You need to stay here for a while."

I groaned again, the lay my head back on the pillow.

This was bad. If I stay in here all day, I will be looked at as weak. But I can't even get up. Ug. What even happened to me? I wonder-

The bell rung, interrupting my thoughts.

"Ms. Perry, what period is it?" I asked.

She looked up from her papers.

"4th period."

Dam.

Students rushed by, a few stopping to look at me. I stared at them, challenging them to make fun of me. Then, a familiar face appeared in the see of faces. Lo, the girl that was next to me in my first class.

She radiated concern, and curiosity  towards me. When she saw me glaring at her, a flush of embarrassment colored her cheeks and she felt like an idiot. I wiped my face of all emotion, turned in my side and closed my eyes.

Lo's aura faded and I did too. I slipped into the world of dreams, questions weaving into them.
