I wanted to open the letter.
My mind was screaming at my hands to rip the envelope up and read what my father said.
But.
My body was saying different. If I opened up this letter. I'd have to leave the bunk. This letter, means no more safety.
"Open it up you wus!" I said thinking I screamed it but my ears told me I had barely whispered. Did I really want to leave? I had water and food enough for a life time and a half! A safe bed and running water.
A part of me didn't want to leave but the other part, the louder part wanted answers and wanted to find her father and hopefully her best friend.
So, with a deep breath and a shaking hand I sat down on my bed. I closed my eyes and slowly ripped it open.
Kaison,
I hear the screams outside and see your peaceful face. If you're reading this, it means you've woken up.
I've done some terrible things in my past but you, you were the only thing I've been proud of. Please understand the stuff I put into you changed your genetics and it can cause....excruciating pain so I put you in a temporary sleep.
However, now that you've woken the changes will activate very soon. Read my journal, all will be explained.
Soon though, the military will come for me and put me on a safe base. I will be taken to California's quarantined city. Please look for me there. I wish I could be there to help you with these changes but I can only give you the journal.
Lots of love,
FatherUntil I felt the wetness on my arm did I realize I was crying. Shaking my head in folded up the letter and put it in my bag.
Quickly I picked up food and water before staring up at the metal door.
I knew I had to leave and I was sure it was time. Something had changed in me, not just my thoughts, literally genetically changed.
The man had sedated me and changed me on my birthday.
Like, gee thanks for genetically mutating me dad! Best gift an 18 year old girl could ask for.
I snorted at my own sarcasm and took one last glance at the bunker before quietly going up the stairs and standing in front of the door.
Opening the glass over the keypad I pressed in three code and then unlocked 4 locks before finally flipping the bar up.
Good God dad, did you really second guess this door?
I've been asleep this whole time and he was nervous about this door?! I could have been killed!
I took a pistol out of my bag and cocked it.
The door opened halfway before stopping. Luckily I could squeeze through and see that the place I once called home, was now grubble and nothing. Panicked I rushed out to see the city I loved now look like what's left of my home.
The neighborhood didn't make a sound which scared me. Where did the mutants go?
All too soon I asked that because something jumped on my back tackling me to the ground.
Screaming I elbowed it in the face making it bellow in pain and back off.
I come face to face with this mutant and realize it's Maura.
Zayo's mother and for a moment I grew weak with sadness.
However, the mutant took advantage of this and knashed it's teeth toward me.
Her eyes grew a disgusting bright yellow and her teeth where black and blood stained. My pulse quickened and I felt a rush of strength and my vision grew blurry.
A scream pierced through the air and then there was silence.
I was standing and the mutant, Maura was laying contorted on a bunch of rubble.
Looking down my veins were going back in to my skin and my heart beat slowed down.
My hair, my jet black hair had a small line of pure white hair.
I needed to get to California as fast as I could.
First I needed to look for Zayo, as stupid as it sounded I knew she was here.
If her mother was here, I knew she would be too. The only place I knew to look was her house, so that's where I headed.
Like mine, her house was rubble and ruined. "Zayo? You here?" I called out half whispering.
No one responded and I pushed forward.
"Hello? Dr. Mourne?" I called out and walked to what used to be their kitchen and saw their bunker door.
Eagerly I knocked on it hoping for an answer but not even steps were heard.
Maybe they went with my father?
"Mutant piece of shit!" Someone screamed behind me.
A bullet shot right next to my head made me quickly turn around.
Which made me go face to face with zayo. Her eyes widened and her face was sullen.
Clearly she got out of the bunker before me because her dirty blonde hair was messy and up in a ponytail like mine.
Her maroon t-shirt had a couple holes and her black jeans had rips. The only thing that looked decent were her boots like like mine, and even they were caked either mud.
"Oh god...I hoped..." she choked on her words and shakily held the rifle.
"No please Zayo! I'm not a mutant..." I said hesitating slightly on the last part. I wasn't so sure ever since the fight with my first mutant.
She hesitantly lowered her gun and smiled. Tears fell from her eyes and she moved to hug me.
However the smile left and she held up her gun, cocking it.
"Well grab a gun and start shooting, we've got company at this reunion!"
I turn to see a pack of mutants staring at us and ready to attack.
"Shit!"
