"This night...was so awesome!"
I exclaimed as I finished off my blue raspberry popsicle. He chuckled behind me and sighed mentally.
After the thing at the gypsy shop I couldn't look at Aaron. He had a glint in his eye, not bad though. Just something that gave me butterflies in my stomach.
However, after the silent walking down the roads and aimlessly going through each store we found a place I liked. It was very chilly in there but it had every frozen dessert you could think about!
For only a few moments did I forget about the kiss and smiled at Aaron. He looked relieved and leaned on me giving me his goofy grin.
That's when it got less awkward and we finally began talking again. We talked about how he got there and what happened with me. I didn't tell him about my mutation of course but everything else, I did.
I told him about the journal and the letter. By the time we finished talking the sun fell and it got dark. My popsicle was finished and stood there looking at Aaron. He smiled and handed my a flashlight. He turned his on and that's when I got a good look around.
The area was illuminated by tons of flashlights from people around. Inside the shops Christmas lights we dully lit up. For a second, the sight looked beautiful and for a moment, I felt safe.
It was only a second though before I forced myself to remember where I was and what was happening.
I looked over at Aaron, his smile fell at the serious look on my face. He touched my arm and looked down at me.
"I want to leave here Aaron..." I whispered looking down. I didn't want to see the hurt on his face.
"Why...aren't you happy...you told me...you feel safe right?" He began stuttering and quickly talked as if any of his words would convince me. A tear fell and I hugged him. He wrapped his arms around my waist and I dug my head into his shoulder.
Finally I released him and looked up at him, "This world..." more tears fell and I quickly wiped them with my hands.
"This world will never be safe Aaron, this place is only temporary. I can't let myself get comfortable. My dad has plans, I trust him. You know I always have." I quickly said.
He wanted to say more but stood there, frozen. I opens my mouth to try and apologize but before I could someone jumped on my back.
"Guess who!!!" Zayo called out giggling behind me. I snapped out of the serious moment and put on a smile.
Simon wrapped his arm around my shoulder, "None other than your two favorite weirdos!" He said.
I rolled my eyes and pushed him lightly away stifling a laugh.
I looked at my two best friends and then I looked at Zayo. For the first time she had spark back in her. This bubble, may not last forever but she was happy here.
Then, with subtly she grabbed Simon's hand and he held hers back. It was a clear sign that she was already comfortable. Zayo was here to stay and I wasn't.
I wanted to break apart and convince her right there that she should come with me. Truth is, I wasn't sure I wanted to leave. Only difference is I knew I had to.
I knew I was leaving soon I just didn't know if I was going to be leaving alone or not.
"Hey, it's getting late. We should get some sleep!" Simon declared as Zayo wrapped her arms on his waist and yawned.
I simply smiled and nodded in agreement, following the two boys up the stairs.
Zayo went with Simon to his den and I shared one with Aaron. His was right next to Simon's.
"Here you go." Aaron said as he handed me blankets as well as a pillow. I smiled and took it.
"Thank you for this...for everything." I said to him and he nodded, shrugging.
"If your friend doesn't let you sleep in his dirt den on a cot then really, what are friends for." He said, less of a question more of a statement.
I chuckled and laid the bigger blanket down for comfort and sighed getting on it.
"This, is so much better than a truck." I said moaning in relief. He chuckled getting on his cot.
"Ya know it could always be like this." He told me. I went onto my sides and smirked, "you getting me into bed? Hardly an everyday thing." I joked.
He snorted but had a mischievous glint in his eye that gave me those stupid butterflies.
"No moron...well...different conversation for a different day love." He added winking. I rolled my eyes.
"I mean the day, the four of us! You're frozen treats, us having some fun adventure! I'd be happy to take you along to our next outing. It's how we get our supplies." He looks at me and I frown.
I covered myself up and held my bag that was next to my cot.
"You know that's not an option for me Aaron. I told you my decision and nothing you will say can convince me to stay..." my voice was kind but firm. I wasn't going to change my choice.
He stood up and I looked over at him.
"I need some air." Was all he said before he left, slamming the door shut. I winced as if he had physically slapped me in my face.
Every part of me wanted to jump up and scream at him. Hug him, tell him I was sorry and that I wanted to stay. My brain knew better and wouldn't let me move. So instead I grabbed my dad's journal and held a flashlight to it. Sitting up, I opened the journal to the first page and began reading.
