I wake up to the chilly morning of the reaping day. Looking around, Prim is lying beside me, sleeping soundly with Mom hugging her from behind. I quietly get up and out of bed and slip on my hunting boots and change into a proper outfit. After grabbing the goat's cheese Prim gave to me as a gift for the reaping day, I slip outside and into the woods.
District 12, nicknamed by the citizens as the Seam, will usually be crowded with coal miners heading to work in this early hour, but today the streets are quiet, all the shops closed and not a person in sight.
Our house is almost at the edge of the Seam, and I only need to cross a few gates to reach the field called the Meadow. Beyond the Meadow is the woods, which, is forbidden to step foot on. There is an electrical fence to prevent people from entering but with the Seam's condition, most of the time it is not charged.
I slide under a hole in the fence and make it to the Meadow in seconds. As soon as I'm in the woods I retrieve my bow and arrows from a hollow log that has been their hiding place whenever I leave the Meadow.
I have to hurry before anyone see me because as I said, trespassing to the Meadow is illegal, and if you get caught by the Peacekeepers, you'd probably be publicly punished or even executed. Some other people will also venture out into the woods if they have a weapon but mostly they won't go with just a knife.
I breathe in the fresh air in the woods as I walk to Gale and I's meeting place. It is a rock ledge overlooking a valley, with a thicket of berry bushes protecting it from other people from noticing it.
A smile makes its way onto my face as I take in the sight of Gale waiting for me on a rock. I never smile except when I'm in the woods with Gale.
"Hey Katniss!" Gale grins, holding up a loaf of bread.
I widen my eyes and rush forward, the bread is still warm. "What did it cost you?"
"Just a squirrel," Gale says, "oh, I almost forgot," He mimics Effie Trinket's Capitol accent, the woman who arrives every once a year to read out the names at the reaping and accompany the tributes to the Capitol. "Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds-"
"-be ever in your favour!" I finish with the same weird accent. I take out the goat cheese Prim left for me and present it to Gale. He lightens up and cuts the bread and gives a piece to me.
"Thank Prim for the feast!"

We quietly eat the bread slices. It never gets awkward between Gale and I, even if we are not talking we enjoy the silence between us.
"You know Katniss," Gale suddenly says. "We can do it."
"Do what?" I ask, my mouth full of the delicious bread.
"Run off. Leave the district. Live in the woods. You and I. We can do it."
I open my mouth, although it is disgusting as I was eating but I couldn't care less. "
