We're three hours in and exhausted. We make the first stop at the closest gas station. It's a Kwik stop. We get out and stretch our legs, Mason fills my car with gas. We go to the bathroom and while we're in there, Emmaline and I talk about Mase and Charlie. I like Mason and she likes Charlie. I say how responsible he is and how I love his smile and my lungs fill with air as I talk. She tells me how she loves his hair and his tattoo. Maddyline laughs at us, and washes her hands, "I wish I could say that about one of them" she says and laughs again. Emmaline and I wash our hands and head out, but before we go we buy a souvenir. A keychain. One for each of us. We run through the sharp cold back to the car and catch our breath while we wait for Charlie. He's smoking on the side of the building. That's the one thing that Emma hates about him. One time he gave her his jacket and she could smell the weed. But all that we can do is help and hope. I guess. He gets back in the car and we make him suck on a mint and change his shirt.
