Chapter 11: No Legacy Without Death

It's days likes these that I like to cherish the moment. I've been shot, stabbed, beaten up and more so whenever I can get a peaceful day like this I cherish it. Looks like everyone is. Terra and Rose are doing lady stuff or whatever, Terry and my brother are training, Garcia is teaching Lockjaw how to read. Then there's me I'm just sailing the ship.

I never take the time to really love this ship, it's older than everyone on here. Captain's Legacy was plundering before I could even walk and she still sails like a dream. I think we should make some improvements though like her paint is chipping off for starters and I think she could use some heavier Cannons, maybe mortars. She'd sing the tunes of war.

I hear Terra walking up behind me but I let her think she's creeping up on me. She taps me and I pretend to jump with fear. "Faker!" She shouts. Apparently not a very convincing jump. "Sorry love but I heard you coming from a mile away. You sound like you've got fireworks on your ankles." I tell her. "Oh whatever. Anyway it's beautiful out today." She says as she looks out at the infinite blue waters.

That look on her face... Reminds me of my first time being out at sea on a good day. Captain Geezer took me out on this very ship back when it was his. I remember he let me take the wheel and told me that the world is full of treasure and gold and anything our hands can hold but days like these only come a few times and that I need to cherish these days. Well obviously I thought he was a crazy ass old man to think a sunny day was better than gold but I was younger then.

"Have a go at it." I say as I let go of the wheel. She looks at me with a sense of fear and excitement and I respond with a smile. "She'll go rogue if someone doesn't sail her." I say signaling. She slowly grabs hold of it. I don't say a word I let her get the hang of it.

I fold my arms and lean against the side of the ship and just watch. She has this giant smile on her face and that's when I see it. She was born for this. "You know kid, you can have all the gold in the world at your finger tips. But days like these are the real treasures that you gotta hold onto. Cherish them Terra." I explain.

"Sorry Captain, but I'd take a handful of gold over a sunny day." She responds. I just laugh. We finally arrive to the island known as Niyah island. The place is covered in fog. We manage to dock and we all walk through what appears to be an abandoned town.

"I don't like the looks of this place." Theo says, the guy dressed in all black with purple eyes. A sound hits my ears. A faint groaning and it's getting louder. I take out my swords and the crew follows. Terra stands back with her bow and Garcia with her rifle. "Lockjaw and Terry stand your ground right here. Rose you come with me." I demand. We walk further and a woman leaps out of the fog and grabs Rose.

What the hell? Rose pushes her to the ground. Her eyes are yellowish and she's covered in blisters and warts and her lips are green, she's sick. More and more people like her come stumbling behind the woman. Men, women, and children all with the same look. Whispering and mumbling random things.

Mostly "Kill me" and "help." It's sad. One begins to pick up speed. "I'll eat your heart!" He shouts as he rushes at me but before he can touch me I drive my blade through his chest. "Thank you" he mumbles as he dies. I'm so sorry... What the hell happened here? Hundreds of people...Infected...Some sort of plague...

They all begin to rush at us. "Rose get back to the ship now!" I shout as we begin running. "Oh are you sure? I was planning on sticking around and letting them eat my fucking heart!" She responds. "Is now really the time?" I ask as we run. We catch back up to the others and they run with us back to the ship.

In the corner of my eye I see Terry trip and fall. I have to get him back up. Terra's already rushing back for him. But they get to him first... They begin tearing the flesh from his bones... I move as fast as possible the grab Terra. All I hear are his pain filled screams and Terra calling after him. I throw her over my shoulder and keep running...Leaving Terry behind...To die...

The last thing I saw was them ripping off the poor boy's face... We finally make it back to the ship and Terra's kicking and screaming. We rush to the lower deck and lock it up so they can't get in. I put Terra down and she rushed to try and get back out. That giant smile I had seen earlier was wiped away and all that was left was a face full of tears.

Garcia's POV-

I watch young Terra call out for her Brother. He is no doubt dead by now. Poor girl's lost her only family, her world must be crashing down around her. She keeps trying to go back for him but James keeps pushing her back. His face is an empty, somber one. She kicks and screams but he won't let her go. "You left him there to die! We have to go back for him!" She shouts again and again.

James hurts as well. The weight is all upon his shoulders. The rest of us don't blame him, he made the right call. But Terra doesn't see it that way. She'll blame and hate him and that's what crushes him, he'll blame himself because of it. I look over to Rose who begins coughing uncontrollably and blood spews from her mouth. No one else notices because of Terra's screaming.

She drops to the ground and I rush over to her. "Rose needs help!" I shout over to James. His eyes widen with the horror of seeing Rose in this state. Terra stops screaming and stares at Rose. How did it all go so wrong so fast...
