A scream escapes my throat. Hal is taking Abel from the room, and I’m running for Ben. My whole body aches as Lourdes begins CPR. Anne is running around adding things to his IV, telling Lourdes things I don’t understand. It feels like forever with my heart breaking each second before his heart beat comes back, and his breathing comes back raggedly. Finally, they let me near him as they try to patch him. I stroke his face with my thumbs, and after a few moments his eyes flutter open, making my heart ache with a bit of happiness. “Ben,” I whisper. He slightly smiles at me, and then winces in pain as Lourdes continues to bandage his leg. “Skitter Bait,” he mumbles his voice is hoarse with pain. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for being a dick. I was pretending you didn’t understand, but you do. I’m so sorry. Is there any way you could forgive me?”
I look at him, and his pale face, and the pain etched into his eyes. I lean forward gently pressing my lips to his. “Of course I forgive you. You’re my husband after all.” He smiles, and gives a small nod. Anne stick a needle into his arm, and then turns to me. “He’s gonna need a lot of sleep now that I’ve given him that medicine. You can of course stay in here with him, and I’ll have Hal bring Abel back here in a little while, just to give you some time with ben.” I nod at her with a thankful smile. I turn and grab Ben’s hand. “Now, don’t you ever go dying on me ever again.” I whisper to him, he gives his head a small shake as sleep begins to weigh him down. ‘I don’t want to sleep,” he mumbles. “You just got here.” I kiss his fingers, “And I’ll be here when you wake up.” He smiles at me one more time before he closes his eyes.
As I sit there clinging tightly to his hand I hear someone enter the tent. “Are you doing okay?” Robbie’s voice is quiet. I slightly turn to see him standing there with his hands in his pockets looking at me quizzically. “Yeah, I’m okay. He’s doing better, so I’m doing better.” He pursues his slightly. “Okay, I was just checking on ya, I’ll see y around.” I give him a small nod, as he turns to leave. I continue to stroke Ben’s face, I don’t even notice Hal enter the tent. “Is he doing okay?” I turn toward my brother who has tired eyes. He holds my son, whom is sleeping on his shoulder which makes me smile a bit. “Yeah, he’s just resting now. We had a little death scare, but you know Mason’s don’t die too easily.”
He smiles, sitting down next me. “I know you two have been having some issues, but you’re still all he can manage to talk about, Abel too now. He really does love you, so don’t go around hating him or anything.” I raise an eyebrow at Hal’s words. “Yeah, there is no way I could ever hate ben. Even if I wanted to. I mean all relationships have issues, you just have to work through them.” Hal pats my shoulder. “Yeah, but I mean not all relationships have alien children.” He says smiling down at Abel.” I grin, but my heart gives a small ache. “Yeah, but not all relationships are as cool as me, and Ben’s.” “Damn right.” Hal replies.
“I’ll put Abel to bed, and stay with him tonight so you can stay with Ben.” I wrap my arms around him hugging him. “Thanks big brother.” He smiles gently hugging me back, trying not to wake Abel. “I love you too little sister.” He kisses my forehead, and I give Abel a small kiss. Once Hal is gone I lay me head down next to Ben’s after just lying there for what seems like forever, Ben stirs a bit. Once he opens his eyes. “Hi,” he mumbles groggily. “Hun, maybe you should get some more sleep.” I suggest seeing as his eyes drop tired. “I really missed you.” He mumbles squeezing my hand.” I press my forehead to his. “I really missed you too.”
Ben tries to sit up, so I get him some pillows to sit up. “So, how where while I was gone?” he asks with a grin. “I was actually going a bit insane over a few thing.” He frowns. “I’m sorry.” He mumbles. I kiss his cheek, my way of saying its okay. “Hey Eliza, I brought you some breakfast.” Robbie mumbles entering the tent. He locks eyes with Ben when he enters, and they both glare at each other for a moment making me feel extremely uncomfortable. “Thanks.” I state quickly taking the few granola bars from him. I hand half of them to Ben, and he grins at me as if he’s won something. “I’ll see ya around.” Robbie once again says as he leaves. “So, I see you’ve made a friend.” Ben says shoving half of a granola bar in his mouth. I smile at him. “Yeah. I needed a friend I’m to antisocial.” I say with a smile. “Just a friend right?” he asks me looking at me with a slightly pained expression. “Of course he’s just my friend. I have a very wonderful husband. I don’t need anything else.” He leans forward wincing as he kisses me, making my heart race.
He pulls away with a smile, and that’s when Hal enters the tent with Abel attached to his hip. “Daddy!” Abel warbles in child voice. Ben’s face lights up reaching for him. Hal grins handing him to his brother. “Hey, buddy.” Ben whispers holding him tightly in a hug. “Goodness you’re so big.” I feel tears well in my eyes looking at both of them. “I love you.” Ben says to him with a small smile. “I love you too.” Abel replies, and tears begin to streak down Ben’s cheeks. He turns to me. “Also, I love you.” I once again intertwine my fingers with his. “I think I love you too.” I reply winking at him slightly as my heart flutters in my chest for the first time in months.
