"Hey...Kelsey! Wait up!" I spin around to see my bestfriend, Hunter running down to hallway to me. "Hey Hunt! What's up?" He reached me and we started waking keeping pace with each other. "I just wanted to tell you not to make plans for tomorrow. I got a surprise for you." He smiled. "A surprise? What?" I asked surprised. He wasn't one to make arrangements at all, let alone surprises. "Yes. A suprise. Don't doubt me!" He playfully shoved me.
"Loooooovvve birddddds!" We both spam around to see my other best friend Natalie waltzing to us. "How's the couple doing today?" She asked nonchalantly- teasing us both. "Natalie we aren't dating." I dead paned. She never got bored teasing us about our friendship. I saw out of the corner of my eye Hunter shifting on his feet.
"Come on. The whole school knows you to like each other. Heck- all of Tennessee can see that!" She was talking wildly with her hands. "Come on H. Let's go." I pulled on his arm leading the way to his car. The thing is, I do like him, more than just a friend. But never would I ever say anything. The friendship we have is precious. It's the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I wasn't going to screw it up.
We reached the car and I pulled my self in. It was an old little mustang, over 7 years older than us- but boy was it nice. Hunt kept it very clean and took real good care of it. "You know.." He started, "it's getting really annoying- her teasing. Why can't she leave us alone?" He asked. "Because she's Natalie. That's what she does." I grumbled. "Yeah- we'll someone better shut her up real soon." I smirked over at him. He caught my look and smirked back.
"Remember. No plans for tomorrow." He said stopping the car for me to get out. "Got it!" I said dramatically waving my arms as I stepped out. "Thanks for the ride, H." "No problem." I ran up to the steps of my house while his car sped off.
"Hey mom, guess what?" I yelled throwing my bag onto the couch. She was in the kitchen. I walked over leaning onto the counter. "What's up?" She asked glancing over at me. "Hunter told me not to make plans for tomorrow. He said he has a "surprise" for me." I air quoted the word "surprise."
"Oh my gosh!" She squealed, "Is he going to propose?" She dramatically ran over to me wrapping her arms around me.
"Mom!" I laughed shaking her off. "Kelsey!" She yelled back. "No Ma, seriously I have no clue what's going on." "Hmmm...," she though "I don't know either. The kids not easy to read." "I know!" I explained, exasperated. "You know what? I'm just going to go to bed. This stress will make me break out." I hugged her, grabbed my bag and ran upstairs. I quickly throw some pajamas on and layed in bed. It was early to go to sleep but I was exhausted.
I quickly shot Hunter a text: "I gotta say. You really got me curious."
I was almost completed dozed off when I got a response: "Good;)"
-The Following Morning-
"Kelsey... Kelseyyyyyyyy."
"What, huh?" I rubbed my eyes. Oh no. I saw my clock read 8:00 am. "I'm late!" I yelled jumping up out of bed. "Oh no you're not." Two arms wrapped around me throwing me back into bed. "What the heck!" I yelled. "Hunter?! What are you doing in here!" I screamed. "Your Mom let me in." He shrugged. "But we're late!" I yelled once more.
"Kelsey," he laughed, "look outside." Curiously I walked over to my window. I pulled my curtains apart and gasped. A white blanket covered the landscape. "Are we in Antarctica?!" I asked shocked. Rarely does it snow here. "I'm not sure what happened either- but hey, snow day!" He cheered.
"What now?" I asked looking at him. "Surprise time. Hurry get dressed. I will meet you down stairs." With that he bolted down the stairs. "Great." I mumbled. I absently mindedly pulled my hair into a side braid, slipped on leggings and a sweater and pulled some snow boots on.
"Ok H, I'm ready." I called running down the stairs. "Good!" He said whiping around the corner. He picked me up and threw me over his shoulder. "Whoa!" I screeched. I saw my mom laughing from the other room. "Bye Ma!" I called to her. "Stay save!" She yelled back.
He carried me like that all the way to the car. "Let me down, goof." I said kicking him lightly. He set me down by the passenger door. I climbed in, as did he. "Where are we going?" I asked as we started, slowly, driving down the street. "Oh you'll see." He said not giving a hint. "You're cruel." I mumbled. All I got was that cute smirk of his in return.
I asked him many times where we were going but he refused to tell. Finally we stopped. In the middle of no where. "Get out!" He demanded, smiling. "You're kidding." I asked. "Nope! Now get out!" I groaned and opened the car door. "Follow me! He called, running towards some trees in the distance.
"Hunter! Wait up!" I called but he didn't slow down. I could hear him laughing as he sped up. I nearly tripped. The snow was up to my knees and I was freezing. I didn't want to loose sight of him so I kept running. Suddenly he stopped up ahead.
"HUN-" I cut of. I saw him staring off into the distance. I stopped once I saw want he was looking out. We were at a cliff. Down below was a crystal like river. A clear field was to one side- whilst a forest was on the other. Boy, was it a sight. But- that wasn't what caught me off guard. It was the message written in rocks in the snow was what stopped me.
"Kelsey, will you be my girlfriend?" Was written below.
I turned to see Hunter staring at me hopefully. "Oh my gosh." I whispered. His face fell. "I'm sor-" he began, "Yes." I said cutting him off. "Really?" He whispered. "Yes." I said running into his arms. He grabbed me tight. "I was hoping that's what you would say." He whispered into my ear.
I pulled away looking at him. His face was red, and I guessed mine was too. From the moment- and the cold. I bent down and scooped up some snow. "You know..." I began, then made it into a snow ball and threw it at him.
He was shocked, then said, "Oh it's on!" And threw some snow at me. I giggled and ran. We chased each other around having our own little fight. After awhile we were both to cold to continue.
"Hot chocolate time?" He asked. "Oh yes." I agreed. We walked back to the car hand and hand, ready to compete this perfect day.
