Adopted By The Avengers

Chapter 4

Nora and Clint were still walking the streets after around three weeks. Clint was ready to give up, regretting the idea.

"Please, Nora. I'm hungry..." He complained. Nora shook her head.

"No. You said you would help, and so you have to keep that promise."

"Nora, it's 11 o'clock. Please, let's go to bed."

"You can do that, but I'm going to keep looking." Clint eyed her, waiting. Nora stared him right back, waiting, daring him to force her back.

"Fine." Clint groaned. "But if you get cold, you can't come back crying."

"Whatever." Nora smirked. "Have fun being a wimp."

"I'll be a warm wimp, though." He stuck his tongue out at her, and stalked off. Nora laughed.

"I'll find them." She muttered to herself. She started skipping down the sidewalk, stopping occasionally to look into windows of store fronts. It was around Christmas time, so the fronts were lit up with twinkling lights; the smell of bakeries wafting through the air. She smiled as she inhaled the scents.

"Hey, pretty lady~" A voice cat called from across the street. She turned to look, and she grimaced. It was just another hobo; no disrespect to them. This one had no teeth, and wore too small of clothes.

"Hey, pretty lady!" She called back. "I have makeup that would fix those teeth- Wait, you don't have any. Sorry for wasting your time!" She chuckled to herself and kept walking. Her sass was something to be reckoned with.

Not long after, Nora reached a fork in the street. Left, on towards Maine street, or right, back towards Avengers Tower. She chose to go left, and soon enough, the street lights no longer existed. She pulled out her phone and used her flashlight to see where she was going.

There was woods on either side of her, and she could hear animals making their way around them. They didn't exactly scare her, so it was no worry.

"Did you see that?"

"No, she left ages ago. It's wasn't her."

"You left her. She didn't leave us."

Nora's head whipped around at the voices. No one was around her, at least, not that she could see. She used her phone to shine the flashlight around, but saw nothing still.

"Trick of the wind," she muttered to herself, not quite convincingly.

"Trick of the wind."

"Shush, let her think that."

"Who's there?? Stop screwing with me, and show yourself!" Nora yelled, spinning in circles. Her breath started to hitch; she started to get anxious.

"She thinks we can just show ourselves, how foolish."

"She's still a child. Don't judge her."

"Show yourselves! I'll call the police!" That was a lie. She would call her da- Clint. She started to dial. "Last chance!"

"Fine, we'll leave for now. But we'll be back." Nora felt the wind kick up around her, swirling around her feet, before it stopped. Nora turned her phone off, and ran.

She ran until she made it back to the tower. Huffing, and out of breath, she tried to smooth her hair down before she went back into the tower. Giving herself a once over, she decided she was as well as she could be. Striding into the main floor, she spotted Pepper. Ducking below the desk Pepper sat behind, she tried to make it to the elevators before she could spot her.

"Nora? What are you doing down there?" Nora nearly hit her head on the desk coming up. Pepper have a small shriek, falling out of her chair.

"Nora!! Good heavens, what were you doing down there?? Gave me a good fright there!" Pepper, laughed slightly, hand clutching her heart.

"But... You said..." Nora sputtered. "Didn't you ask me what I was doing?" Pepper glanced at her.

"No....You know what, it's almost 1. Why don't I walk you to the elevator, so you don't hurt yourself again?" Nora hesitated, but nodded. Maybe it was just so late that she was hearing things.

"Yeah, that's probably best. What are you doing  up this late, anyway? Shouldn't you be home?" She questioned Pepper. She just laughed.

"Tony had some contracts he needed read over, so I told him I'd read them over for him, so that he could get some sleep. You know how he is with that." Nora nodded.

"Okay, well, get some sleep yourself, Pepper." Pepper winked at her.

"You got it. See you tomorrow."

Sorry this took so long! I had literally no urge to finish the chapter! But there will be an ending; I already planned it out. Plot twist!!!
