I run down the passageway to Hell. Soot and ash are kicked up by my feet as I try to catch up to Julian. I can feel sweat trickling down my neck and under my shirt. The heat is suffocating, but I continue on. I have to stop Julian.
Something whizzes past my head and embeds itself in the cavern wall. An arrow. I resist the urge to turn knowing it'll only slow me down. Besides, I know who my attacker is.
It's Tom.
I turn around the corner and see an unconscious figure lying on the ground, just before the drop off. His chest rises and falls slowly. He whispers something.
"Son of Hades. Die in peace."
"Julian!" I look out at the expanse of area before me. About a hundred feet away, in the middle of the River Styxx, stands Julian in a boat. I look down at the water. It's placid and calm, like a sheet of glass.
I can hear my heart beating in my chest. My breath comes in short, shallow gasps. He should have hard me. Why can't he hear me?
"Julian, don't! It's me! I'm alive!" I yell. "Juli-"
A hand clamps down over my mouth, cutting me off.
"Stop. Let him. He's better off-"
I sink my teeth into the palm of Tom's hand. He lets go of me and looks at his hand. I taste the coppery metalic taste of blood in my mouth. I spit it out and look back at Julian.
"Julian! I'm alive!" His eyes snap to me. I smile. He sees me. He smiles then looks back down at the water. "Julian? Julian!"
"I can be with you again. I can't be with you if we're seperated by two worlds that never meet."
"Julian! I'm alive! I'm not dead!"
"I love you, Zoe." He looks into my eyes. "I love you."
"Julian!"
He jumps from the boat into the water. Without someone to hold part of him and without a happy thought, or a reason to live, he's dead.
"No!'
An evil cackling arises behind me. Tom's hand rests on the small of my back. "Goodbye, Zoe."
The next thing I know, I'm falling.
My scream fills the air and is joined by Tom's evil laughter.
And then, I feel as if I'm on fire.
And it won't stop.
