“What the hell was that?!” Ghoul yelled, looking behind him.
“I have no idea but we better get the hell out of here!” Kobra said. There was a cloud of smoke starting to chase them as he hit the pedal and forced the car to head to the boarder.
“No, wait, Kobra stop the car. NOW!” Ghoul screamed. He slammed his foot on the break, sending them both forwards. “Kobra, that explosion came from the hospital. Someone blew up the damn hospital!” He screamed.
“Breath, Ghoul. We’ll go back and check it out, see if everyone’s okay” he said, turning the car around and heading back to the hospital.
They drove painfully slow to the hospital, trying not to run anyone over on the way and stopped outside the burning building. Flames were dancing throughout 5 different floors and there were people running out of the building, some screaming, some coughing, some crying and some injured. They got out of the car and looked at the Dracs that were stumbling around to try and get people away. “What do we do? The fire is on the floor that Kasi’s in” Ghoul said, over the noise of everyone.
“We go in and we get her out. Now” Kobra said, pulling his bandanna over his mouth and nose and running into the building.
Ghoul pulled up his bandanna and followed Kobra into the building. The lifts were out and there were people piling down the stairs quickly. They pushed past them all and got to the third floor where there was fire in the ward she was in. The quickly pulled the doors open and ran in. “Kasi? Can you hear us?” Kobra called out. Nothing. Just the roaring of the fire. The dashed through to her bed and found her passed out. Smoke inhalation. Kobra picked her up and Ghoul pulled the wires off her quickly.
They ran out of the ward quickly and headed back toward the stairs. “Fuck! The fire!” Kobra yelled. Ghoul looked around and noticed the fire escape. He pulled Kobra toward it and threw himself at the door so it would open. They got out of the building and ran down several flights of stairs before moving away and coughing hard. Kobra put her gently down on the ground as a group of doctors flocked over to them. “Are you three okay? We’ll check you over follow us” they said. Ghoul picked up Kasi and kept coughing, following the doctors.
He put her down carefully on a gurney that was put out for patients to be checked over. The doctors rushed around her and immediately started checking her over. Kobra and Ghoul left quickly and quietly. She would be okay. They hoped she would be okay. If they left and something bad happened to her, they would never forgive themselves.
They headed back to the diner quickly in the car and made sure they didn’t hang around any longer, just in case they got blamed for blowing the hospital up. They stopped the car outside the diner and headed inside where they were met by Poison and Jet. “What the hell happened to you two?”
“The hospital got blown up. No idea who by but it was timed to go off after we left. Whoever set it didn’t expect us to leave 10 seconds to early” Ghoul explained. Poison nodded and Jet got to checking them over.
In the main Better Living building, a woman in grey was watching the screens in the Scarecrow unit and watching the hospital fires. The video footage had been rewound and she was watching it back, knowing there were Killjoys in the hospital. She watched the footage back and watched as they ran back in and pulled Kasi out of the hospital. She got suspicious and called in Korse. “Who is this girl?”
“She works with the Scarecrow unit. Why?
“The Killjoys seem very taken with her and there have been reports from the field about her spending time with the Killjoys.”
“She has told me otherwise. She has said that she doesn’t know the Killjoys and doesn’t like them” he said. The woman nodded.
“I would like her to be brought in for questioning and interrogation. I don’t care what it takes I want the truth and I want it soon.”
“She will be leaving the hospital tomorrow to recover from her injuries. Should I wait until she has recovered?”
“No. You will follow her out into the desert and if she goes to the Killjoys you will bring her here. Got it?”
“Yes ma’am” he nodded and left the room. He called a meeting with some of the Draculoids and told them the problem. They had devised a plan and would follow her tomorrow. He knew she would be heading into the desert and he had been watching her but never understood her fascination with it. Now he knew why.
The next morning, she was released from hospital. She signed her discharge forms and headed out of the hospital. There was a car waiting to take her back and she got into it. She put her seatbelt on and the car headed back to her house. She watched out the window as the streets passed her by quickly and she couldn’t wait to get back home. She couldn’t wait to get back in the comfort of her own bed and couldn’t wait to be warm and have a good sleep and some real food. The car stopped outside her house and she got out slowly, wincing slightly, She grabbed her keys from her pocket and opened the door, walking inside and putting a small bag of medication on the counter and put her keys on the key hook. She headed into her bedroom and got changed out of her clothes and into a pair of pyjamas.
