Chapter 29:
4 months later
1…2…3…look up!
My brown eyes met with his gray blue eyes, my heart beat quickened as I looked at him in his suit, the baby blue tie bringing out the blue in his eyes. My hands holding the bouquet began to sweat and my body ran cold, the nervousness taking over. Neither of us took a step toward each other, and I could faintly hear the piano music playing outside, letting me know that it was our turn to make an entrance, but I couldn’t bring my feet to move.
“Okay, okay,” I could hear Alex whisper hastily behind me. “I get it. I get that it’s hard to be near each other at the moment, and I know Daniel, that you’re surprised to see her,” she said directing her voice at her little brother. “But, the groom and the other bridesmaid and groomsmen are going to think that I ran off, and I don’t want to them to think that. So, if you will please, take his arm, and walk down the aisle pretending that you like each other. Thank you!”
Nodding my head, I stepped toward him, the familiar cologne that he always wears wrapping around me, causing a shiver to roll down my spine. Mentally telling my feet to move, we began the walk down the aisle, a smile plastered on our faces. When I looked over to my brother and parents, I could see the concern on their faces, and I mentally begged them with my eyes to have me get out of here as soon as possible. Of course, they just stared back, not understanding that I’m trying to teleport them a message. God, that alter looks like it’s a mile away from us.
“You know if you don’t stop shaking people are going to think that you’re catching a cold,” the deep baritone voice whispered to me, causing me to jump slightly. Looking to him, I saw that he didn’t even take a glance toward me, his smile still stuck on his face as he nodded kindly to the guests and family. He spoke to me. Sure it was short and in a rude harsh tone, but none the less, he spoke to me. Ten months and not a word to each other, and he’s spoken to me. This is progress right?
“Uh, Skylar, you kind of need to let go,” he whispered to me. I shook my head out of my thoughts and looked around, and sure enough we were at the end of the alter. Laughing uncomfortably, I let go of his arm, and walked quickly up to the other bridesmaid.
The music changed, and everyone stood up and turned around to watch the entrance of the bride. I, however, didn’t even glance back; instead, I stared at Ryan, the groom and husband to be. Looking at him and watching his reaction to seeing his beloved for the first time that day, the way tears came to his eyes and the sparkle that showed, brought tears to my own eyes. He found his true love. I know last summer he thought that I was meant for him, but really, I was only a bridge that would lead him to her, the woman that he’s meant to be with.
When Alex arrived, meeting him, he continued to look at her like she was the treasure that he has been waiting for his whole life. Watching the two look at each other as the pastor went on with the ceremony, a pain of jealousy and fear plunged my heart as I began to wonder if I was ever going to experience this day with the man I love.
Looking over at my true love, I was caught by surprised to find that he was already looking at me. He quickly turned his eyes away from me, and looked back at his sister, the fake smile appearing on his face. From any outsider, you’d see a baby brother smiling in happiness for his big sister, getting married to the man of her dreams. But to his family, mine, my friends, and me, you could see that everything about the way he’s looking at his sister isn’t in fact true.
