Alice's P.O.V

Getting into my car, I started it and peeled out the school parking lot, pissed. Who did that stupid, arrogant new kid think he is, asking me if I was muted by choice or by birth?

'Stupid new kid. Stupid dad.' I thought as I made a sharp left turn into Camden's school. Today was his 14th birthday, he needs a day off from school. I parked my car on the 'Visitors' slot of the parking lot and shut the engine off.

I pulled me keys out and pocketed them as I climbed out. I entered his school office, an elderly old man sat bored at the front desk. He straightened himself up when he saw me enter. He gave me a tilt of the head.

"Eh, sign out?" his Spanish accent hit me. I nodded.

"Who?" the old man asked, waiting for me to answer back.

I smiled sympathetically and signed a paper and pen. The old man caught on and handed me them. I wrote down 'Camden Walsh' in neat writing and handed it back. The man took it and went to call Camden down.

"It'll be just a moment, sweet." The old man, smiled at me while I sat down.

I nodded my thanks and leaned my head against the back of the couch. The door opened and Camden came in looking around for me. When he spotted me, he smiled big and wide, showing off his white teeth.

He wore a simple black tee with a JV jacket and washed out jeans. His faded grey tennis shoes were old and ragged. But he looked comfy. His green eyes seemed to smile as we walked out from the school office. I smiled at him and wrapped my arm around his shoulders and gave him a side hug while ruffling his hair.

He swatted my hand away and gave me a playful push on my mid-section. I lost my breath; he pushed on my broken rib. I stopped walking and lifted my hands above my head. Cameron finally figured out what happened and started to panic.

"Alice, you have to get that checked out?! I'm so sorry for pushing you. I forgot, I'm such a fudging idiot." Cameron went on his mindless rant, pulling and raking his hair with his hands.

Once I regained my breath, I walked up to him and grabbed his wrists, pulled them down and closed my eyes and breathed in deep. Cameron followed what I did. When he opened his eyes, he gave me a sympathetic look with a weak smile.

"I know, I know. You can't go get checked out, they'll notice what's wrong, call the Foster Care unit and place us in the system. I know, I've heard it all before; I just don't want you to keep getting hurt, sissy." Cam rubbed his face with a frustrated sigh.

I nodded once in acknowledgement of what he said and threw his bag in the back of my car. We got

in and I pulled out of the school parking lot. Cam pulled out his CD of Breaking Benjamin and picked some track number. The song was Diary Of Jane.

I tapped the beat of the song on the steering wheel as I drove while Cam sang along to it. We got to a red light, and Cameron lowered the music. I turned my head to him all while keeping the light in my view.

"Do you think Mom and Dad remembered my birthday? Do you think Mom is even home?" Cam asked as he peered out the window.

I thought about it. Mom and Dad loved Cameron, that was a known fact. So surely they must have remembered their favourite's birthday, right? And well Mom, she would probably be to busy whoring herself out to come and see Cam, but who actually knows.

Even though Cam hates how I'm treated, he craves the parental love and guidance our parents should have been giving us. They should have been the ones to pick him up and not me; them making sure he gets fed and sleeps well, not me. Yet, here I am.

I felt bad for him, just not for the fact he has to deal with what's going on at home, but for the fact the only parental love and guidance he's been getting was me, and I had to base it on what our parents did; but reverse it.

The light was still red.

"Maybe, Cam. Maybe Mom is home today. I don't know, we'll see when we go home." The light turned green.

Our car ride home was silent the rest of the way.

When we got home, I grabbed Cam and I's bag and pulled it over my shoulder. Cam took my keys and ran up the porch to open the door for me. He ran inside, and I heard faint sounds of giggles and chatter.

'Mom and Dad must be home already.' I thought as I took a deep breathe before entering the house. I dropped the bags at the side carpet I left there for wet shoes and followed the noise.

When I entered the kitchen, everyone turned and faced me. Mom was surprisingly home and cleaned up. Her strawberry blonde hair was in a ponytail, her eyes in a simple khol styled way with a barest hint of lip gloss. She had on a baggy shirt and jeans on; a nice changed then her skimpy whore clothes.

Dad was well dressed like he just got off of work. His brown hair disheveled, green eyes had a twitchy glint in his eyes like he knew something. For once he didn't look like a high rolling pimp, but a bank investor with his navy blue suit and hair brushed to the side.

Mom and Dad looked up at me, and gave a glare of disgust. I knew what I was headed.

"Go up to your room, don't come out the rest of the night or anything, got it?" Mom sneered at me.

I looked away went up to my room. When I got in my room, I laid down on my cot and pulled the sheet up to my chin. I curled up into a ball and went to sleep.

I heard my door open. I look up and spotted Cameron tiptoeing into my room and making his way into my cot. I moved over for him and he curled up next to me. We laid there, I was already going back to sleep when Cameron spoke.

"When Mom and Dad asked me to make a wish, I made a wish and I really hope it comes true. I wished for you to have a better childhood and talk again, sissy. You deserve it, even if you don't think so. I love you, night."
