january. it's the start of all things good.

you have a year to look forward to, and friends to look with.

you smiled at your girlfriend maya, standing on a rooftop feeling the wind through your hair.
"i love january."

"and i love you." she said and your heart fluttered like the wind.

your mom told you in a christmas card she was pregnant. a little ultrasound picture and you leaped off the couch and screamed for a good five minutes.

(she had been keeping the secret for three months.)

the baby would be born this year. and you were overjoyed.

auggie was a middle schooler. a "cool kid". uncle shawn reminisced saying he was the exact way.
(you still ruffle his curls when you pass him even though he groans.)

he jumped around with you hearing the news. and sometimes let's his "cool kid" wall down and tells his girlfriend ava he can't hang out to hang out with you.

you hold his hand and whisper to him, tears in your eyes. "sometimes i still tell my friends you're five. when you're thirteen now"

he laughed. "i'm not five."

you sighed. "i miss you being five. you weren't a hormonal teen."

he sat up on your bed and rolled his eyes.
"you're hormonal- you're crying."

you wiped your eyes and hugged him as long as he let you. "yeah- i just love you."

"i love you too, sis."

january 12, you were hungover.

your parents thought it was hilarious and felt the need to keep yelling throughout the apartment much to your dislike.

auggie let you lay your head in his lap, only for a few minutes though, and pet your hair on the couch.

your mom and dad stood in front of you two, and you grinned at moms four month baby bump.

"we're gonna go get japanese. it's the best hangover food, we'll bring you some back." your mom explained.

your dad winked at you. "she's been craving orange chicken for the past week."

you laughed and kissed them goodbye, holding them a bit longer because- it felt weird letting them walk out the door.

you laid on the couch, and texted maya that you were feeling better and you could hang out tomorrow.

;;

maya said okay. and that you were never drinking again.

you laughed and put your phone on the coffee table.

;;

you woke up, a couple minutes before 12am. hearing a knock on your door.

"mom?" you called out, slowly getting off the couch.
