I was in so much pain, it was my fault though. I knew she was strong, but I had no idea how strong. I shouldn't have scared her, I never really wanted to hurt her. Because I scared her I got myself hurt, and I can only imagine what people would think about her now.
I heard the monotonous beeping of a heart rate monitor, there was a mask on my face, pumping oxygen into my broken body. My arms were wrapped in gauze, I could barely move them, all I could do was was press the small call button by my side.
A small nurse came, almost skipping, into my room. She saw I was awake, sat me up, cranked up my morphine, turned on some Mozart, and told me the Doctor would be in shortly. The pain was beginning to dwindle, it was becoming more bearable, must've been the morphine.
I heard the door open, a stranger entered. I didn't know the young woman who came up beside me. "Hello," she looked down at her tablet, "number 7534, how are you doing?" She looked attentively at me, waiting for my answer. "Better than what I was," I nervously laughed, she didn't find it quite as amusing.
She began a basic checkup, listening to my breathing and all that. "I never got your name," I jokingly stated, trying to break the heavy tension in the room. "I'm Dr. McDermott," she stated blatantly. "Excuse me, but do you know where my normal doctor is?" I asked as she started checking the joints in my legs. She stopped, annoyed with the question, but ,reluctantly, she grabbed her tablet, lazily looked at my file and said, "Oh," she was surprised,"He's dealing with more important matters, that's why I'm here." I accepted the answer, even though it wasn't very satisfying.
"Alright, now, lets check your arms," she gently began to unwrap my left arm, the burns were far worse then I thought they possibly could be, it didn't feel like it ( credit, once again, goes to the morphine) but it looked horrible. They were blistered and a majority of the blisters were popped and the bandage was heavily dirtied on the inside. There was no way it wouldn't scar. Dr. McDermott just looked at me and said, "I'm going to go get new bandages," she rewrapped my arm with the dirty ones and started out the door and down the hall.
It wasn't long before she returned, clean, white bandages in hand. As she began to wrap my arms, a timid knock came from the door. A young, small nurse cracked the door open and quietly stated, "Number 7534 has a visitor."
"Does this visitor have a pass?" Dr. McDermott asked in a very annoyed way, not wanting to deal with another Subject, "Yes ma'am."
"Send them in I suppose."
The nurse stepped out of the doorway and let in Shawn, God was I happy to see him, he was obviously happy to see me too. He seemed ready to run to the side of the bed, but Dr. McDermott raised her arm signaling him to stay back for a moment until she finished wrapping. Shawn stood there, awkwardly wrapping his lengthy arms around himself.
The Doctor finally pushed herself away from my bed and allowed Shawn to my side. "H-hey man," he stuttered, "I'm so happy to see you, you really scared me." Shawn smiled down at me from his high perch on his shoulders. "I'm happy to see you too, but is that girl, the one who was in there with me, is she okay?" I asked. The corners of Shawn's mouth turned down slightly, "Um...I don't I haven't seen her. Why do you care?" The follow up question caught me off guard, he was offended but trying not to show it, "No, I'm fine," he stated defensively. "You know I don't like it when you do that," I scolded, and I really didn't like it, but it wasn't like I could keep him out of my head, we were too close. "I'm sorry, but you almost died and you don't care," Shawn's icy eyes avoided mine, "It was terrifying seeing you pulled away like that," he seemed on the verge of tears. He pulled a stool up and sat by my side, we talked for maybe thirty minutes before someone came to collect him. The Doctor left soon after and I was alone in the cold, clean room.
