Chapter 4: The Not Set Up Set-Up
Kyla's POV
"That, was the bomb", I said as Finna came around the corner. She jumped slightly.
"Kyla!", she yelled. "You don't do that to people".
"It was awesome", I said wondrously.
"You're a goon", she said.
"He asked you out. He flipping asked you out, HOW IS THAT NOT EXCITING?", I yelled at her. Finna stopped walking.
"You were listening?".
"Obviously", I replied.
"Hey I was on the internet and apparently the ferry is shut down. Some idiot left a window open in the steering room and now it's flooded and they can't get the controls to work", Finna said to me.
"What?!?", I screamed.
"Kyla, calm down, it's not a big deal. I booked us a place to stay that's just two buildings down, we can walk".
"For the record", I began, "I do not think that telling someone to calm down helps the situation. AND OF COURSE IT'S A BIG DEAL. NO. We can't stay here and leave Emily and Tianna alone. We have to swim".
"Kyla, stop ranting. It's fine. It'll be fun, and Tianna and Emily won't care. I'll call them right now. Let's have an adventure", Finna told me as she dialed the phone.
"I'll do it", I said as I grabbed the phone.
Emily's POV
I dipped my paintbrush into the swirl of blues I had layed out on my paint tray and began to paint a sky across the blank canvas. I slid the brush across the top half of the canvas before adding different shades of blue to create the look of a vast sky. Just before I was able to move onto making the forest the phone rang.
"Hello", I called into the phone.
"Hey Em-star, It's Kyla".
"Hey Kyla!", I said as I realized I had just covered the phone in blue paint. " I heard the interview on the radio, it was so funny!".
"Yeah, It was awesome", Kyla agreed. "Hey, listen. The rain flooded the steering on the ferry and we can't get back tonight for Waffle Wednesday".
"Oh my gosh", I said. "That's awful. Do you guys have a place to stay?".
"Yeah, Finna found us one. I feel bad for canceling the Waffle plans".
"No, not at all Ky. Don't worry about it, it's not your fault", I reassured her.
"Okay", Kyla said dejectedly. "I'll miss you", she joked.
"Awwwww, I'll miss you too", I laughed. "I'll tell Tianna, she should be home from school around four. Just get home safe tomorrow, and tell Finna she did awesome".
"Okay, bye Emily!", Kyla said.
"Bye California", I said before hanging up the phone and returning to painting my masterpiece. By the time I had completed my painting my sky and forest had become a sunset and a beach. I tended to change my mind as I was painting.
"Done", I said as I looked at my painting that I had labored on for nearly four hours. I looked at the bubble clock on the wall. Nearly four o'clock, meaning Tianna will be home soon. I walked away from my easel and started scrubbing my paint tray in the sink. I scrubbed the orange and purple off of my hands after washing my hands at least three times, but I could not get the blue handprint off of the phone. This would not make Kyla happy.
