Chapter 6
Sean
I open my front door to a red nosed Ava. She pushes past me and walks up stairs. "Well hello to you too!" I shout. I go upstairs and into my room to see she threw her duffel bag next to my closet and laid down on my bed. "Are you okay?" I ask cautiously. "No not really." I walk over and sit on the edge of the bed. "Sean I ran away from home. I had nowhere else to go but here, and if my dad finds me he'll probably ship me off to go live with my grandma in Gary, Indiana." She sits up to look at me. I have no idea how to respond so hug her. She hugs me back so tightly I guess I did the right thing. "Okay so do you wanna watch a movie now?" She looks at me and smiles "That'd be great".
Ava and I sit on my bed waiting for Easy A to come on when she blurts out "I'm really sorry about my dad!" I laugh "It's cool Ava, I've been treated worse by ex girlfriends." I give her a reassuring smile and she looks relieved, "Okay". We're about half an hour through the movie when suddenly Ava gets up and bolts out of the room. A second later I hear her whining. I run to the bathroom to see her hacking up a storm. "Whoa are you okay?" I ask nervously. "Um, *gag* yeah, I think I caught the flu from someone this has been happening for about 2 weeks now. "Two weeks?" I ask. "What time of day exactly?" "Well sometimes it's random but mostly in the-" she freezes and looks at me "the morning". Oh shit, I think to myself.
Ava
Sean and I speed walk to the convenience store 3 blocks away. My heart is pounding and it's not because of our pace. We walk in and automatically we both walk to the uh 'feminine hygiene' area. We stand silently in front of the pregnancy tests. I reach up to grab one but my hand is shaking so bad I can't bring my self to get it. Sean takes it upon himself to grab my hand, pick up the most expensive test, walk over to the checkout area and pay for my pregnancy test without missing a beat. He didn't even look the slightest bit embarrassed or ashamed when the older checkout lady gave us a scornful look. As we walked out of the store I whispered a quiet thank you to Sean, he just simply nodded his head.
When we get back to the house I'm about to take the test from Sean but he looks at me, hugs me and tells me every thing will be alright no matter what happens causing me to smile. We walk upstairs and he waits for me outside of the bathroom. This is probably the most awkward thing that I've ever had to do. I pee on the little stick, sit in on a tissue on the counter and plant my butt on the toilet seat as I stare at the little fortune teller. "You know this is a win-win situation right?" I hear Sean yell from his spot outside of the bathroom. "What?" I say confused. "Yeah, if it's a boy you can name him Sean and if it's a girl you can name her Seana" he says seriously. I lose it and start cracking up, "what is wrong with you boy?" "Just trying to make you a little less nervous" "well it's working."
It's been five minutes, I look at the stick that shows a little plus sign in the circle. Too shocked to say anything. I open the door to the bathroom and sit back down on the toilet. Sean comes in quickly and picks up the pregnancy test. "Sean" "Yeah" he says looking concentrated "That's the side I peed on." "Ew!" He dropped the stick like it was hot, and again I start to laugh. "You're so gross" and he joined me in laughter. "So.." He says after a minute. "Well...it looks like I'm having my dead boyfriends baby." All of the color leaves Sean's face and then returns, "so you'll think about that name thing right?" He says smiling. For the rest of the night Sean and I plan out how I'll tell my dad the news, he even goes as far as to volunteer to go with me to make sure that nothing bad happens to me. I already know that my dad won't let me stay in the house, he's told me several times that he "won't raise a whore". Sean is gonna talk to his mom when she gets home tomorrow to try to convince her to let me stay here. Now I know Ms. Hayes loves me but I don't think she could ever love me that much so if this plan falls through, I don't know what happens after that.
Sean
It's about 7:15 when my mom comes home from work and finds me waiting for her in the kitchen. "Hey baby, what're you doing up so early?" I have no idea how to start so I just say it. "Mom Ava is pregnant with Austin's baby, she's upstairs asleep in my room and she can't go home." I look at my mom with eyes full of worry. She turns around from the counter and says "how far along is she?" "Not very far, she just took her pregnancy test last night." She sighs "Sean what so you want me to do?" "I want you to say that Ava can stay here, that she can have my room, that she doesn't have to live in shame with her baby." After a long conversation with my mom that eventually included Ava she finally agreed that my best friend could stay here but she would not be apart of the telling Ava's dad. We got so excited that we tackled her with hugs, Ava thanked my mom so many times I thought she couldn't hear herself. Now that step one was complete step two was ready to ignite.
