Chapter 9
Sean
As soon as we get into the car Ava busts out crying. I try to hug her but she goes off on me. "Stop it Sean! I'm tired of hugs, I'm tired of pity, I'm tired of...this." "This? What! Us? You're tired of me always being by your side, following you around, not judging you at all? That's what you're tired of?!" "I don't know, maybe! Maybe if you weren't so damn clingy..." She stops talking and looks out of the window. I angrily start the car and drive back to the house in silence. She hops right out of the car when we arrive, waits for me to unlock the door, goes straight up stairs to my...her room and shuts the door. "Drama queen" I say to no one rolling my eyes. I walk into the kitchen, grab a Pepsi and sit on the couch. Did she really call me clingy? After all I've done for that girl? I turn on the tv to a Jackass marathon and try to take my mind off of Ava before I get so angry I go and bust the door down. Somewhere during a toilet prank I fell asleep.
I wake up to my mom telling me that she's leaving for work, it's 9:52 PM. "Okay mom I'll see you in the morning." "Go check on Ava, she's been in the room all day." When she leaves I slowly walk up the stairs not sure if I'm ready to talk to Ava yet. When I get to the door I knock twice. No answer. I knock again. Still no answer. "Are you still mad? I mean you are the one who went off on me." After knocking on her door for another 5 minutes without an answer I get worried, she locked the door. "Ava if you don't open this door, I swear I will break it down." Silence. I take a deep breath and take a few steps back. A second later my shoulder is crashing into the door. It takes two more painful blows until the door finally gives. I look around the room, it's empty. It's cold in here though, I look at the window to see it wide open and the new sheets we bought tied together leading out to the ground. "Really?!" I shout. I run to the window, she was nowhere in sight.
I spend the next 3 and half hours looking all over for Ava. This would be a lot easier if I had a car. I check everywhere for her. I even go to her dad's house where I end up having an empty vodka bottle thrown at me. Thank god I dodged before I got hit. I was just about to go back to the house and call my mom when my phone rings. It's an unknown number. "It's almost two in the morning who in their right mind would be calling right now...unless?" As soon as I answer I hear Ava's scared voice in the receiver. "Sean? Oh my gosh I'm so happy you picked up!" "Where are you?" "Well it's kind of a long story-" "Ava!" "I got caught trying to buy weed from a cop!" "Are you serious Ava? What the hell were you thinking?!" "I was thinking it'd be able to get my mind off of things for a while!" "Where are you?" I ask again. "At the police station on 58th and Garfield." "I'm on my way." And then I hang up.
I walk to the Chase Bank on Ashland and take 1000 dollars out of my checking account. I guess this is an emergency. I catch the bus down to Garfield and then the one to 58th. It had been over an hour since I talked to Ava. When I finally get to the police station I end up having to sign a lot of paper work, claiming that I was 20 and trying to convince the officer that I was Ava's older brother. Can this night get any worse?
Ava
The officer yanks me into the squad car by the arm. "Please sir can you just let me off with a warning?" "Sorry young lady, buying illegal drugs is against the law and especially when a minor is trying to do it." I am so screwed.
When I get to the police station they ask me a few questions and then put me in one of those holding cells like you see in the movies. God what have I gotten myself into? And the way that I treated Sean earlier, he must hate me. After all that he's done for me, I got angry at him for something that he didn't even have any control over. Ha, I must be best friend of the year. The police officer scares me when he walks up to tell me I can make my one phone call now. I have no other choice but to call Sean.
Sean
I wait in the lobby for Ava to come out. When she walks out and sees me she looks so relieved and runs up to me. She hugs me so tight you would've thought that she was being tortured back there. I don't hug her back though, I'm done caring. "Sean?" She stops hugging and looks at me. I turn and walk out of the police station, trying to leave my feelings behind.
