10 years later
I walked through the forest, ducking under branches with small icicles hanging sharply. I walked with my senses on alert, always looking behind me for any followers, checking the trees, corners I walked around. I suddenly heard voices, I quickly crouched behind a rock. I peeked over the rock as I saw two people taking a seat on a fallen tree. It was a man and woman. He sat taking her hands in his. He turned to face her but she refused to make eye contact and decided to stare at the snow. He moved his hand making her look at him. She just shook her head, her blonde long hair shimmering ever so slightly. I gasped a little at this moment, this is the closest I've been to another human in years. she looked in my direction. I held my breath as I camouflaged, the girl shrugged it off and returned to look at the boy she sat next to. They looked as if they had a fight or problems before. I was staring at them argue, I wasn't close enough to hear what they were saying but she was now standing and he had his head in his hands shaking his head in disbelief.
He looked up, his dark navy blue eyes meeting mine. He straightened his back and his eyes were wide. I held my breath, becoming invisible. He stood and started walking towards me. I quickly stood and ran forward behind another rock behind the girl. I had returned to my normal skin. Panting slightly from being out of breath. The girl didn't look happy so she slapped him lightly on the arm as she marched off into the direction they came from. He turned and sat onto the fallen tree. I was still hidden but I could sense he felt my presence, he stiffened slightly and his eyes started darting around. I decided to make a run for it, I couldn't hold my breath to hide me whilst running, I took a deep breath and took a step forward. I quickly ran to another rock near me. Letting it cover me as I peaked over at the boy. He stared right at me. I gulped and saw no use in hiding. I stood staring him straight in the eye. One thing I learnt from living my life alone was to never show your weaknesses as they will be taken against you. I Could easily take down the boy stood in front of me because he looked hurt and broken, but something felt different about him so I decided to leave it.
"Who are you?" He spoke, his voice croaky. My usual response was to shrug as if I didn't know how to speak English, but it felt wrong lying to him, yet I didn't even know him
"Nix" I said taking a step forward.
"What are you doing here?" He questioned
"I accidentally stumbled upon you and that girls conversation" I cocked my head towards the direction she went, still not breaking eye contact. He looked unsure but shrugged it off, he was about to speak but a stick snapped to the right of us.
"Yo, who are you talking to?" A low deep voice asked towards the boy stood in front of me. I held my breath, going invisible.
"Uh Nix" the boy pointed in my direction but I wasn't there, or at least visible to them. A puzzled look showed on his face as he scratched the back of his neck.
"Let's go inside, you've had a rough day" The man said, his hair was black that flowed into a beard, he had hazel eyes that looked wise and pure. He led the boy towards the direction he came from.
I waited a few seconds before following behind. I was visible, but I could easily hide. I tracked them until they reached a camp area, it was covered in a stone brick wall, hiding them. I was stood by a tree that looked over into the camp. I began climbing the tree, slipping a few times from the ice and how numb my fingers were. I finally found a branch steady enough for me to sit on as I peered into their camp. There were at least a dozen people or more. I counted eight men and three women. They had 6-8 tents set up, two small tin buildings, a camp fire in the middle which was quite large, 6 logs put into a circle around the fire. They seemed to have a good camp here, I wonder what tribe they were...
I tried my best trying to find out who the leader was, by my guesses it was either the guy with the beard or the darker skinned man, they were always talking to people and ordering things to do before they ran off to find another thing to occupy themselves with. I noticed the girls did nothing but sit in the corner surrounding the blonde girl I saw earlier, she appeared to be crying. The boy I met earlier was looking around nervously, as if he was looking for something or someone. He shrugged and looked up, of course in my direction. He cocked his head to the side, I assumed he meant for me to go to the gate. I slide off the branch and fell to the ground, rolling to break my fall.
As I stood brushing off the snow, he stood looking for me. I decided to be annoying and throw a snowball at him to get his attention. I crouched down, scooping a small amount of snow, forming a sphere shape. I lifted my arm, sticking my tongue out slightly to the left, as I lunged my arm forward watching the snowball connect to his back. I giggled and held my breath, he looked in my direction only to find I wasn't here. I quickly walked forward and stood behind him. I tapped his shoulder, he turned looking a little pissed, only for his face to soften recognising it was me.
"Where did you go?" He asked, I shook my head and began walking towards the tree again, not wanting his 'friends' to see me. I'm an outsider, I was probably expected to be killed on the spot.
He stared at me waiting for an answer. I rolled my eyes and simply said.
"I'm an outsider, I shouldn't have let you see me, I am most likely expected to be killed on the spot or taken in for questioning... When that guy came I... Uh.. Left, yeah, not wanting to be seen" he nodded understanding me completely but still looked confused. I don't know how he did that but he did.
"What are you?" He blurted out, unaware he had said that.
"I'm a perfectly normal human" I lied but he didn't need to know my backdrop.
"How can you just disappear so quickly?" He asked
"I'm just quick on my feet and very stealthy, I was uh, trained" I lied again, and I felt bad for lying. No.. What am I talking about?
"Why don't you come inside the camp, you must be freezing out in the snow" he said walking back towards the camp only to realise I wasn't beside him. "Come on.. They won't hurt you, they're good people and accept anyone" he gestured for me, I sighed and made my way over to him.
