Michael was walking home angrily. He couldn't believe what Ashton dared to tell him. He wasn't jealous of Calum! Why would he? It wasn't like he was gay. Therefore, there was no point on being jealous. The blond was just stupid.
He breathed in and out several times before he put the calmest and happiest expression on his face and enter his house. His mother was obviously already there, cleaning the house. When she saw the pale boy, she smiled brightly – probably too brightly to be a sincere smile – and hugged his son.
"How was our day, Michael?"
"It was good, mother, what about yours?"
"It was okay. You should go up in your room and do your homework now."
The woman smiled once again and went back at cleaning the room. Michael closed his eyes, sighed and headed to his room, which was upstairs. He entered his bedroom and let himself fall onto his bed. He hated how his mother was always fake with him, just as his father was always arguing with him about his grades. All he wanted was to have parents who cared and loved him. Instead, he had a father who was barely home and a mother who was the fakest woman ever.
Without much of a surprise, the pale boy didn't decide to do his homework but rather taking his guitar and playing it. Unconscionaly he began to play Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran but stopped in the middle of it, memories coming through his mind. Calum was the one who asked him to learn it and then teach it to him. He grumbled, put down his baby — as he liked to call the guitar — and just listened to music on his phone instead of playing it. Music was his gateway most of the times. Whenever his parents were arguing, or let him alone for days at his house, music was here to make him feel alive again, no matter if he was playing or listening to it. No one, except for Calum and Ashton, knew that he knew how to play the guitar and the piano. It was his little secret. That is why having to cover or to compose a song with Calum was stressing him out, even though he didn't let anyone really know. First of all, it was Calum, he had been a jerk with him, he still was a jerk with him but he couldn't really do otherwise, he was just trying to protect the tan boy just as much as he was trying to protect himself. Then, adding to the simple fact that he had to work with Calum, he also had to perform in front of all his classmates — which you could also call idiot teenagers — whereas none of them new his music skills.
Michael sighed and opened his window needing a little bit of fresh hair. As soon as he did, he regretted it. Ashton was in front of next house's door, bumping and yelling.
"CALUM THOMAS HOOD I SWEAR TO GOD I'LL BREAK THE DOOR IF YOU DON'T LET ME IN!"
Yeah, the kiwi was his neighbor which he was glad for when they were littles and friends, but had learnt to hate a year ago. Hearing Ashton that worried made him worrying too but there was no way he showed it to someone.
The blond was probably worrying too much for his best friend but he knew Calum. He knew he was more than badly emotionnaly hurt to skip school. He knew he could be unpredictable in those kind of moments. He didn't know what was going on in the tan boy's head and that was what making him so stressed. He took his phone and called his friend over and over again. Finaly, after ten missed calls or so, Calum picked up.
"What do you want?"
His voice was broken and sad and Ashton felt his heart breaking in tiny little pieces.
"Let me in."
He wasn't just talking about letting him in inside the house but also inside Calum's brain. He wanted the kiwi boy to talk to him. He heard a sob that brought tears in his eyes. He hated Michael more than he had ever hated anything and anyone in that very precise moment.
"Please Calum, let me in..."
His best friend hung up. Ashton felt his nerves kicked in again, but relaxed when he heard the door clicked open. As soon as he saw the brunette he hugged him tighter than he'd ever done before.
"Never do that to me again."
The blond said that a bit ruder than he wanted but Calum understood. He understood that his best friend was worrying sick and so he just nodded, whispering "sorry". And there, without any real reason, he broke down in tears, but he knew he wasn't alone, not this time.
Minutes passed by, and after a while of crying and telling Ashton what he had heard Michael saying, Calum eventually stopped the tears from rolling down his face. His best friend was even more angry at Michael now that he knew, but it wasn't his priority. Not at all. He wanted the brunette to play some music right now, so he'll prove him that he was made for music. The older took the kiwi's hand and leaded him to his room. He handed him his guitar (playing the bass all alone wasn't that great to his point of view) and motionned him to play something. Anything he wanted. Calum sat, looked at his guitar and forgot everything, from his best friend to the fact that the windows was opened. There was only one thing in his mind: memories.
Give me love like her
Cause lately I've been waking up alone
...Michael felt his heart tightening when he heard the sounds that were escaping next house's window, it was their song. He was playing their song. It was beautiful, pure, amazing. And everything inside him broke.
