Chapter 4 ~ Welcome Clef
~~~"Isn't it so cute." Ruby cooed, gently tickling her new Kricketot under its chin. "But what should I name you...?"
"Kricketot the Cricket Pokémon-" I began reading from my Pokédex, hoping to inspire a good nickname for my best friends new Pokémon. "It shakes its head back to front, causing its antennae to hit each other and sound like a xylophone... it's also male. Something musical might fit..."
"I'm gonna name him Alex... or maybe Hersh..." Ruby wondered aloud. "Alex Hersh?"
I face palmed. "Should I even bother asking why?"
My bestie shrugged. "I dunno... Google it."
Rolling my eyes I replied with a simple. "No thanks." Pretty much blocking out my friends babbles from that point onwards.
The trees whispered slightly in the morning breeze, barely audible over my friends tapping about potential nicknames for her first Pokémon. I'd always found it strange that someone so utterly different from myself could be my best friend. Ruby, as an only child, had very over protective parents who would watch her every move. She was out going and always willing to give her 2cents on any topic while I, the younger of two kids had been neglected, bordering of abused, most my life. I was quiet and shy around people I didn't know and could honestly say that the only friends I'd ever had in my life were Ruby and Christian.
"It's confirmed then! I'm going to name him Rolland!" Ruby cheered, snapping me out of my daydream.
I frowned at this. "Are you serious?" Rolland was the name of her crush who'd gone on his own travels last year.
"Yeah... Why? I asked you if you had any objections and you didn't say anything sooo~!" My bestie smirked, knowing I wasn't paying attention to anything she had said.
"Ruby. You've known me long enough to know if I don't answer, I'm not listening." As small smile working onto my features. "You really should know better at this point."
"Tot..." The small Pokémon squeaked from my friends arms. "Kriki."
Ruby sighed. "What. Would you name him then?"
"That's not for me to say. The name of a Pokémon should be chosen by the trainer. Something that feels right to them." I explained. "It's how I named Bloom." Bree already had her name from her previous trainer. "Though, I was like three at the time."
Ruby shut her eyes for a few seconds, thinking deeply. "Fine, how about Clef. You know, like a treble clef?"
"If that's what you feel is right." I sighed, looking at the small Krikitot in my friends arms out of the corner of my eye.
"So, how about it?" Ruby beamed. "Do you like the name Clef?"
"Tot?"
The green eyed trainer beamed further, if that was even possible. "Clef it is!"
I smiled, despite rolling my eyes while doing so. This was completely typical but regardless, Ruby was my best and only friend so I was stuck with her as much as Clef was his new nickname.
Glancing down at my Pokédex I read out Chef's moves and other data to my friend. "As I said, he's a boy and he knows Growl and Bide... might be a bit tricky to level him up in the wild but he is a level 5 and Krikitot evolve fairly quick."
"Not everything is about training and evolving Pokémon." Ruby smirked. "This is meant to be for fun. Relax, enjoy life."
Bloom touched my arm as I let out a deep breath. "I'll relax when I'm Champion."
"How do you even plan of defeating Cristian? He's one of the strongest trainers in the world! It's a scientific fact." Ruby questioned, raising an eyebrow. "The only trainer who's ever been able to take him down is that Emma Dragon chick but she's champion of the world."
I sighed deeply. "No one knows Cristian like I do. I know his style to down to the letter, if anyone can defeat my brother, I can."
"So you're going to wing it then?"
Smiling to myself, I nodded. "More or less." Swinging my backpack to my front, I pull out two sandwiches and hand one to Ruby. "After all, plans can be turned to ash if the slightest thing goes wrong. Christian has more then six Pokémon, some of which are believed to be no more then myth. A plan won't help me against my brother but we'll see when we get there."
"Guess you're right there." Ruby replies, munching on her sandwich. "And Christian would know you know his team so he'd plan something you wouldn't expect... Right?"
"Precisely." I replied, watching the morning fog dance among the silhouetted leaves above us. "I have a long way to go if I'm going to defeat my brother, but I will, one day, I will."
Ruby simply smiled in return. "So, do you plan on catching any Pokemon off this route?"
I shook my head lightly. "Nope, the Pokémon here are far too under levelled and way to..." Frownibg I slightly, I struggled to think of the correct word. "Generic. Every aspiring trainer catches a Starly or Bidoof and Christian has already trained a Luxray so that would be a waste."
My best friend nodded her head in understanding. "I get that..." She seemed slightly off put suddenly, as if she wanted to ask something she knew would stir conflict. With her eyes down cast Ruby continued. "Did you umm... bring your medication...? I just need to be sure because at home you have your brother and his Pokemon to make sure you take it but since none of them are here and Bree and Bloom will be in their Pokéballs most the time we are traveling--" Ruby babbled quickly, anxiously, as she knew this was a sore topic to bring up with me.
With a small sigh, I turned and stopped in front of her, forcing her to stop. I forced a small smile over my features, folding my arms over my chest. "Yes I brought plenty." I confirmed. "I get it okay, you're worried for me and I get it. If it makes you feel better, I'll even give my stuff to you so you can shove my pills down my those if you need to. Okay?"
Ruby nodded, still frowning but seemingly much more at ease. "No, I trust you... Besides, I can tell when you don't take them. You're always so grumpy!" She exclaimed, a half-hearted smile forming as I stepped out of her path and we continued walking.
"Aren't I always grumpy according to you?" I smirked, raising an eyebrow at my best friend.
"Well... Yeah... You get more grumpy then usual though." She remarked, gently rubbing her Krikitot's head. "Hey, I've heard you could teach Krikitot to sing at certain times everyday, like an alarm. We could teach Clef to sing when it's that time of day... or night."
I simply sighed again. "Sure, you do that. Can we stop talking about it though? I still don't like the fact Christian makes me take that stuff."
"Right." Ruby smiled, giving a single nod of her head. "Okay, I won't bring it up unless it's absolutely necessary."
"Good, thank you Ruby." I smiled, looking up at the sky. "Hey, how about we stop for breakfast, we've walked almost through the night." I questioned despite the fact I wasn't hungry.
Ruby seemed utterly relieved. "Yes, I'm starving!" She beamed, dropping her bag where she stood before rummaging through her bag for food.
With a roll of my eyes, I say slightly off the path, smiling to myself as Ruby tore into her sandwich. Turning my gaze towards the sky, I watched a flock of Starly following a Staraptor. My mind wondering to my brother.
Watch out Christian, I'm coming for ya!
