Sadie sat with Jack and Pang, feeling a bit better after the conversation she just had with Henry. The three angels stood around the table, arguing in low voices. Henry refused to be sent back to bed, saying that things had gotten complicated and they needed to discuss strategy.
"You want to try to draw again?" Jack asked as he lay on his stomach, starting another one of his own.
Sadie shook her head quickly, "No..." She watched him work, joining him on her stomach.
"Is it true that your half monster?" Jack asked and Sadie went rigid. She didn't know how to answer, scared that if she said yes, he would become afraid of her and leave, but if she said no, he would accuse her of lying and she would lose her friendship anyway. She sat there, struggling with her answer, until Jack turned to her, a large smile on his face. "If you are, then that's totally cool. You'd be like a superhero or something."
Sadie relaxed a bit and smiled, "I never thought of it that way." She said softly. She looked at Pang, seeing her looking at her with slight fear. The scared girl slid a bit farther away from her and avoided Sadie's eyes. Sadie's smile fell and she sighed, "Aren't you scared of monsters though?" She asked him softly, stealing glances at Pang.
Jack nodded, "Yeah, they're big and really creepy, but you're not scary. You're my best friend." He bit down on his thumbnail, a small habit he had picked up from his dad, and concentrated on his drawing.
"Why can't we tell them?" Sadie heard Henry suddenly almost yell, clearly agitated. Sam glanced at the three of them and pulled Henry closer, muttering things that Sadie couldn't make out. Jenny joined in, clearly disagreeing with Sam's decision. Sadie sighed and turned back to watch Jack draw. As she watched, a buzzing had begun in her head. It sounded like hundreds of small flies had gotten trapped in her head and were trying to get out. She scratched her head absentmindedly, the buzz increasing in strength the longer it was present. She groaned, laying her head down on her arms, the buzz beginning to hurt a bit. It felt like her brain was throbbing, beating like the heart in her chest.
"Jack! Jack you can't save them now!" Sadie heard a faint voice. She looked around, but no one had spoken. She blinked, her vision blurring. The voice was familiar, yet she couldn't quite place it. "Stop squirming or they'll get you!" The slight pain in her head spike and she was sucked into a house. The walls were burning, furniture smashed. Sam stood in the doorway of the living room, holding a squirming Jack. Great, white and grey wings were held high above his head, protecting them from falling debris.
"Mom, dad!" Jack yelled, clearly not listening. Sadie turned to see a monster, sharp teeth gleaming brightly with two red eyes staring at the two of them. Behind it, lay two people, still and unmoving in the heat of the fire. The monster laughed, its laugh high pitched and sounded like it was coming through a pair of broken speakers.
"Give me the boy...." It whispered, a large tongue rolling over the white teeth.
Sam scowled, "Never..." He clutched the cross around his neck.
It growled gently, "Even if he's adopted?" Sadie shrank away as it slid forward.
"Do you really think I care!!" Sam yelled, "Our parents didn't and neither do I!!" Jack had stopped his struggling and was staring at the creature with a mask of fear.
"YOU FOOL!!!" It roared, shooting forward. Sam quickly pushed Jack into the other room and pulled out two strange looking weapons from the hilts on his hips. They were sharp points of steel, looking like giant thorns. He quickly connected the two, a flash of green light accompanying the assembly of the two pieces and sliced at the large monster. It screeched and snapped, but Sam was too fast. He held out his hand, green light flooding from his fingers and burned where it touched black tar. His weapon was coated with green light as he plunged it into the monster and the thing screamed. It disintegrated quickly and Sam took no time to look at his victory. He scooped up Jack and ran out of the burning building, flying off toward the church they were currently at. Sadie watched the whole thing, the throbbing in her head intense. Pain once again spiked, long and sharp. She screamed covering her ears to try and block out the intense noise of the buzzing in her ears.
