The monsters paid no attention to the small black creatures making their way across the moonlit clearing in the forest. Their only concern was the small child that would upset their plans of a better future for monster kind, one filled with open space and energy for all monsters. They could taste the vile magic of the angels, fresh and hot, but the trail was growing cold.
"It's fading!" A monster screeched, desperately searching for the vile taste of the angels.
Another growled and a voice, warped and bubbling with a sort of feminine touch, snapped, "Stop your whining and search harder!!"
The previous monster hissed like a snake and its attacker gurgled before Sadie's monster roared, "Will you two stop your bickering!!!" It's eye wept red angry streaks of red as it swiped it's large hands across the tree bark, gashes forming in the tough plant, "We must find them! To fail is not an option for the future of monsters!" The two fighting monsters hissed and blew clouds of cold air at one another, splitting off and still searching for the ever thinning trail of magic. Sadie's monster shook its large head, wishing it had brought better search parties to search for the little imp, but its resources were limited. It's eye blazed and dripped with annoyance and it turned to the trees. It then stopped, catching a particularly strong trace of magic. It turned and planted its eyes on the small band of creatures making its way across the clearing. It tried once again to find the trace but it was gone. It narrowed its large eye at the black creatures. They definitely smelled like monsters, but... It growled at itself and turned away. It was wasting time and they were running out of it.
One of the small creatures looked back, having felt the large eye burning into her back. She trembled with the dread that swam through the air. A nearby monster clicked it's large, gaping mouth, and turned its eyeless face to her. She froze as it laughed gently, its tongue testing the air as it peered at the black creature standing before it, so small and fearful. As they stared, one of the larger creatures swooped in and grabbed the small child before they could do anything else.
"What are you doing you pile of ooze?" its companion asked, multiple eyes peering at it with irritation.
"I thought I caught a trace of human..." It answered, watching the black creatures run off, the trees of the other side close.
"There are no humans as far as I can tell." The other monster retorted, testing the air just to make sure, "We're wasting our time out here..." a rumble came from the back of its throat, angry and menacing.
The monster's eyeless gaze left the black creatures as they reached the edge of the trees on the other side. They scurried up the nearest tree like a group of squirrels without another encounter and collapsed with hearts beating against their ribs.
"Why did you stop Sadie?" Henry whispered harshly, "That monster could have killed you..."
"It was staring at me..." Sadie answered, her hands shaking from her fear and the cold, "I...I couldn't move..." Henry sighed and placed his black stained forehead against her sticky hair, clearly relieved.
"You guys did great." Jenny said as Pang clung to her leg, her eyes wide and glistening with terror, "...Let's get out of here." The group made their way out of the forest, the monsters slowly thinning out until they reached the edge of the trees. Without another moment's hesitation, they were off and flying in the moonlight, the air nipping at their ears. Sadie curled against Henry's back, still feeling the stare of the monster burning holes through her head. She tightened her hold on his shirt and Henry's hands around her grew a bit tighter. Sadie stared at the moon as they moved through the cold air and she remembered the vision she had before this had all happened, the memory of the family calming her buzzing nerves.
