I came to school the next day with my bandaged wrist hidden under the long sleeves of my crewneck. I quietly sat down in first hour and played on my phone while I waited for class to begin. Eventually, the bell rang and as I glanced around the room, I noticed James wasn't here today. I felt a surge a disappointment swell up in my chest, but I quickly suppressed the feeling. It's no big deal, maybe he just didn't feel good, or he slept through his alarm.
While I enjoyed myself with these trivial thoughts, I couldn't help but feel like there was some deeper meaning behind his absence. My mind wandered back to the previous night, but I was quickly pulled out of my daydream when the teacher called my name. I decided to not worry about him for the rest of the day and to just focus on school.
My next two classes passed in a blur and before I knew it, it was time for lunch. I lingered at my locker before heading to the cafeteria. I was hoping that I could wait long enough for my table to be almost filled before I got there.
After a few minutes of unnecessarily looking at my reflection in my locker mirror, I headed to lunch. The moment I walked into the cafeteria, Charlie waved me over, looking excited. I slowly weaved my way between the tables before plopping myself down in the seat next to hers. She turned and looked at my excitedly.
"So I hear you had a secret little rendezvous with James after school in the art room yesterday" she said in a giddy tone. I chocked on my water I was attempting to swallow. It took me a moment to compose myself before I could respond.
"How did you hear about that?" I questioned.
With a shrug she simply said. "Word travels fast around here, especially juicy gossip about my mysterious new girl and the infamous James Dade."
"What did you hear?"
"That you too made out, but got caught by a teacher." I laugh bubbled to my lips.
"That is so not what happened. He told me to meet him, so I did. He wanted to show me his artwork." Her smiled faded a little.
"I was kidding about the make out session, but did her seriously just show you his art and you left?" I nodded. I thought about telling her about the incident with his eyes, but decided to keep it to myself for fear of sounding a little bit crazy.
Just then Nick walked over and sat down next to me. He slung his arm over my shoulder just like he did yesterday. With a wink he said. "So you and that James guy, huh?" Before I could respond, I heard someone clear their throat. I spun around quickly and saw James looming over me.
"I need to talk to you."
