Chapter 4 | The RUINS

  Ayano got bored. REALLY bored waiting for Toriel, so she decided to walk into the next room herself. There, she got a phone call from Toriel.
- RING -
"Hello? This is TORIEL. You have not left the room, have you? There are a few puzzles ahead I have yet to explain. It would be dangerous to try to solve them yourself. Be good, alright?"
- CLICK -
Ayano took a glance at the room. There was a Froggit next to her, so she talked to the Froggit.
"Ribbit, ribbit." Ayano didn't understand a single word, but thankfully Chara translated it for her. "Excuse me, human. I have some advice about battling monsters. If you ACT a certain way or FIGHT until you almost defeat them, they might not want to battle you anymore. If a monster doesn't want to fight you, please... use some MERCY, human." "Ribbit." Froggit finished his last sentence.
"Okay..." Ayano decided to listen to him and try it out. Behind the Froggit had a hallway. Ayano walked through the hallway, finding herself in a small room, with 'Monster Candy'. She decided to take four. "You took too much too fast. The candy spills onto the floor." Ayano walked out of the room pretending nothing ever happened.
Then, a monster blocked her way. Chara whispered, "Whimsun approached meekly!" Ayano thought she should help the poor fella. "Halfway through your first word, Whimsun burst into tears. You won! You earned 0 EXP and 0 GOLD, though." She progressed to the next room.
Ayano attempted to walk through the next room, where a hole formed below her and she fell. "OH NO, NOT AGAIN!!!" She mentally screamed. Red leaves broke her fall. At least she didn't pass out this time...
Ayano looked around, and saw a door leading to the opposite direction. Behind that door, was a lot of ladders. She began to climb those ladders, but strangely she didn't feel tired at all. At no time at all, she reached the top. "That's the puzzle of this room." Chara explained. Ayano progressed, to the next room. There, she got another phone call from Toriel.
- RING -
"Hello? This is TORIEL. For no reason in particular, which do you prefer, Cinnamon or Butterscotch?"
"Hmm... Butterscotch."
"Oh, I see. Thank you very much!"
- CLICK -
Ayano took a good look at the surrounding, it was a rock-pushing puzzle. After she just took as so much a step, her phone rang again.
- RING -
"Hello? This is TORIEL. You do not DISLIKE cinnamon, do you? I know what your preference is, but..." Toriel paused. "Would you turn up your nose if you found it on your plate? Right, right, I understand." Before Ayano could reply, Toriel interrupted. "Thank you for being patient, by the way."
- CLICK -
Now Ayano could push the rock and get through this room. But at a corner of the room, was a sign. Chara helped Ayano understand it again. "Three out of four rocks recommend you to push them." Ayano saw no other rock than the one in front of her, but shrugged it off, and pushed the rock to a platform. There, she progressed... and encountered Froggit again.
"Mind if I take control of your body? Don't worry, you make the decisions, I'll do the talking." Chara then waited for Ayano to nod, then went into her body.
"Now, you can *Check, *Compliment, and *Threat."
"I choose... Check his stats."
"*FROGGIT - ATK 4 DEF 5.
"Life is difficult for this enemy."
Now, it's Froggit's turn. A frog-like bullet aimed at Ayano's purple heart, and she dodged it, only hitting it at the last moment. It was pretty simple, nonetheless.
"Now, I choose... compliment. It's the only way I can earn reputation, right?"
"Okay. Froggit didn't understand what you said, but was flattered anyway. "
Froggit blushed deeply, then aimed tiny, bug-like bullets at Ayano's SOUL, and she dodged them, no problem at all.
"Froggit is reluctant to fight you. This is the time you can SPARE it."
"Uh..." Ayano didn't like it. Froggit almost killed her, and she had to SPARE him?! Regardless, she spared the poor frog.
"You won! You earned 0 EXP and 2 GOLD."
Ayano finally got out of the FIGHT, and then Toriel rang.
- RING -
"Hello? You do not have any allergies, do you?" Ayano was curious why she asked that. "Huh? Why am I asking? No reason... no reason at all."
- CLICK -
Strange as it is, Ayano felt good sparing Froggit and Whimsun. With that, she progressed to the next room, for real.
Ayano so much as took a step on the darker floor pattern when she fell into a hole.
"What the...!" Ayano was baffled. How could she get through? She explored the lower ground, and found a sign. "Please don't step on the leaves. This means you have to memorize the pattern of the red leaves and don't step on them on the upper floor."
"Thanks, Chara. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THAT?!"
"Well, you COULD let me control you. This time, I do the thinking, you follow my orders."
"Okay."
"Whimsun approached again. I'll just console him and get it over with."
"Good idea."
They finished the fight, made it out of the lower ground, and solved the puzzle. And progressed.
Another rock-pushing puzzle. Simple. Ayano pushed the first two rocks, and was about to push the last one, when...
"WHOA there, pardner! Who said you could push me around? HMM? So you're ASKIN' me to move over? Okay, just for you, pumpkin." The rock moved a little east, towards the platform. "HMM? You want me to move some more? Alrighty, how's this?" The rock moved north in direction. "HMM? That was the wrong direction? Okay, I think I got it." The rock moved back and towards the platform.
Just when Ayano was about to walk towards the exit of the room, the barriers suddenly broke out again. "This rock is really giving me a headache!" Ayano thought.
"HMM? You wanted me to STAY there? You're giving me a real workout." The rock moved back to the platform.
Ayano finally could progress. In the next room, Ayano saw a cheese piece and a mouse hole, resembling the one she had in school. She felt homesick for the first time in her life. REALLY homesick. She even could give ol' Kokona a hug.
"What's wrong?" Chara got concerned.
"I feel very homesick. I even miss my rival. I miss my classmates. Most of all, I miss my Senpai."
"I don't feel the same way. Humanity is evil and cunning. I don't like them."
"If you could've given them another chance, they're not so bad after all."
"Here. Eat this." Chara pulled out one of the monster candy they had. "You're hurt. Monster food can heal." Ayano ate the monster candy. She felt better.
"Now, we can progress."
The next room was a ghost blocking the way of Ayano's trip. She could barely hear the ghost saying, "Zzzzzzzz... Zzzzzzzzz... Zzzzzzzzz... (Are they gone yet)... Zzzzzzzz...."
"This ghost keeps saying "Z" out loud repeatedly, pretending to sleep. Move it with force?" Chara asked. Ayano agreed. The FIGHT started.
"Here comes Napstablook." Chara possessed Ayano's body. "This time, you can *Check, *Flirt, *Threat and *Cheer."
"Check. I need to know what I'm up to."
"NAPSTABLOOK - ATK 10 DEF 10."
"This monster doesn't seem to have a sense of humor..."
"Oh, I'm REAL funny." Napstablook told Ayano all of a sudden.
Tear-shaped bullets appeared and Ayano dodged them without a problem.
"This time, I'll cheer him up." Ayano decided.
"Good idea. You gave Napstablook a patient smile."
Instead of more attacks, Napstablook just did absolutely nothing, his expression saying 'Really not feelin' up to it now. Sorry.'
"I'll cheer him up more, to help him. Surprisingly, this feels better than slaughter."
"Nice. You told a little joke to Napstablook. He looks just a little better."
Napstablook attacked. Ayano decided to cheer him all the way.
"Napstablook wants to show you something..." Chara explained.
"Let me try..." Napstablook cried some more, making a hat. "I call it the 'Dapper Blook'... Do you like it..."
Ayano cheered him again. Napstablook looked pretty happy. "Oh gee..." The FIGHT ended.
"I usually come to the RUINS because there's nobody around..." Napstablook explained. "But today I met somebody nice... Oh, I'm rambling again... I'll get out of your way..." And Napstablook disappeared. Ayano progressed to the room on the east.
There were spider webs on the wall, each web containing a few small spiders crawling on it. In the center of the room, there was a sign. "Spider Bake Sale. All proceeds go to real spiders." "Cool." said Ayano. "Could I buy one?"
"It costs 7 GOLD for one Spider Donut, and 18 GOLD for one Spider Cider. You don't have enough GOLD for this... sorry."
"Oh... how do I earn GOLD down here?"
"You FIGHT monsters and they'll drop GOLD for you."
"Then I should FIGHT some more monsters, right?"
"Yep. Let's go SPARING some monsters!"
"Okay. But I don't like SPARING them a lot."
So they backtracked and fought two Moldsmals, killing both.
"You won! You earned 6 EXP and 6 GOLD."
Ayano went back further, encountering two Froggits. She killed one, and spared another by terribly wounding it.
"You won! You earned 3 EXP and 3 GOLD."
Ayano felt horrible for once in her life, and regretted it for when the Froggit was wounded, it tried to run away.
Now, she got 11G. She bought a Spider Donut, and progressed further. She saw 3 Froggits there, but didn't bother to talk to them. Just when she was almost leaving the room, her phone rang.
- RING -
"Hello? I just realized that it has been a while since I have cleaned up. I was not expecting to have company so soon. There are probably a lot of things lying about here and there. You can pick them up, but do not carry more than you need. Someday you might see something you really like. You will want to leave room in your pockets for that."
- CLICK -
Ayano didn't give much thought of that. She progressed.
The next room had a sign. "There is just one switch." Ayano thought it might imply that the hole-making tiles in the room might be the key to getting to the next room. She stepped on the first one... and saw a vegetable-like creature in the ground of what looks like... a Carrot? She took a closer inspection when...
"Vegetoid came out of the earth!" Ayano entered a FIGHT. "This time, you can *Check, *Talk, *Devour and *Dinner."
"Check."
"VEGETOID - ATK 6 DEF 6
"Serving Size: 1 Monster
"Not monitored by the UDSA."
"Is that supposed to be a joke?"
"At least you got it..."
All his attacks were vegetable-shaped.
"Now, I want to *Dinner, whatever that means."
"You pat your stomach. Vegetoid offers a healthy meal. Now reach for the green bullets!"
Ayano saw a green-shaped bullet. She grabbed it, and felt better. She recovered! But she took damage from the white bullets Vegetoid aimed at random directions.
"You should save the Spider Donut for a future use. In simple words, you'll need it later." Chara told Ayano after the fight.
"Why?" Ayano didn't understand.
"Just... trust me."
"Alright..."
Ayano went back up with the magic stairs and down the next hole. There, she found a Faded Ribbon and picked it up. On the way up, she encountered another monster.
"Loox drew near! This time, you can *Check, *Pick On and *Don't Pick On."
"Check."
"LOOX - ATK 6 DEF 6
"Don't pick on him.
"Family name: Eyewalker."
In his turn, Loox accidentally hit Ayano in the SOUL, taking damage.
"Don't pick on, definitely." Ayano told Chara.
"Finally someone gets it." Loox told Ayano.
Ayano then spared Loox. The FIGHT ended.
"You won! You earned 0 EXP and 5 GOLD.
She went back down the third hole. There, was a switch. She flipped the switch and despite knowing that the gateway was unlocked, decided to explore the other holes just in case something was inside.
In the fourth hole, Napstablook was lying down on the floor looking down.
"I fell down a hole... now I cant get up... go on without me... wait... ghosts can fly, cant they... oh well..." Napstablook disappeared again.
The fifth hole was nothing. The sixth hole, had another Vegetoid. Ayano encountered another FIGHT. Now, she knew completely what to do.
"Dinner. Now. Chara, just do it."
"You pat your stomach. Vegetoid offers a healthy meal."
Ayano reached for the green bullet, and caught it. She was really getting good at it. Then she SPARED Vegetoid.
"You won! You earned 0 EXP and 4 GOLD. You should probably eat something."
Ayano took out another Monster Candy and ate it, then progressed.
There in the next room, were a lot of buttons.
"Don't worry, just follow my instructions and read the sign. This room doesn't have any puzzles, it's already solved."
Ayano listened to Chara's advice, and went to the next room.
"Press the button behind the pillar! The blue one!" Ayano obeyed. "You hear a clicking sound."
There was a sign near the exit of the room. "If you can read this, press the blue switch." "See? I told you! Just lay back and follow my instructions."
When Ayano was near the end of the room, a pair of Vegetoids appeared and started a FIGHT. Ayano knew exactly what to do. She won in no time.
"You won! You earned 0 EXP and 8 GOLD." Ayano was okay, but she had some minor hits and injuries.
"If you can read this, press the red switch." The next room's red switch was clearly visible. Ayano pressed it and continued.
"Migosp crawled up close! Just SPARE Moldsmal!"
"Why?"
"JUST DO IT!"
Ayano spared Moldsmal and Migosp's attack was really easy. He didn't even attack, and was free to SPARE.
"You won! You earned 0 EXP and 2 GOLD."
The next room's was to press the green switch. But, there were two switches hidden behind the shadows, and was very hard to make out the color.
"Just press the one closest to you. Do you trust me?"
Ayano had nothing to doubt. She pressed the one closest to her, and BAM! The door unlocked.
The next room had vines on the floor in a part. It was beautiful to be here. Maybe if Ayano made it out alive, she could bring Senpai here for a date? No, the first problem would be Osana. SHE's still alive.
Ayano went to the east hallway first, finding a Toy Knife. She put it in her pockets. Then, she progressed into the North room.
As soon as Ayano took a step, she heard Toriel's voice. "Oh dear, that took longer than I thought it would." Toriel went to the tree in front of Ayano to call her, and as her cell phone rang, Toriel noticed her. "How did you get here, my child? Are you hurt? There, there. I will heal you. I should not have left you alone for so long. It was irresponsible to try to surprise you like this. Err... Well, I suppose I cannot hide it any longer. Come, small one!"
Ayano, relieved to not be fighting monsters again, followed Toriel to a supposedly cute, tidy house in the RUINS.
