Hailey’s P.O.V
Okay, Hailey. Calm yourself down. Take a deep breath in. Take a breath out. Repeat. Very good.
I tried to think of excuses but my mind wasn’t cooperating with me right now and the fact that I had a headache didn’t really help. As soon as we saw Karla, Logan left my hand and coldness crept over me. He gave me a reassuring look and we both stopped in front of Karla. Karla looked at us and then looked at the ladder and then back at us.
“So does any one of you know what this ladder is doing here? I clearly remember the ladder was behind this bush yesterday evening.” She gave us a questioning look. I took a deep breath. Straight to the point. No beating around the bush. No pun intended.
“I know what it’s doing here, Karla,” Logan said.
“Well, go on.” She said, impatiently.
“So, the thing is I was getting a bit bored here, you know, without my friends. So, yesterday I found out that my old friend lived here. I contacted him and he invited me to a party and I didn’t want you to know that so I waited till you guys were asleep and I sneaked off.” Logan explained.
Karla gave Logan a searching look. Didn’t she believe him? Oh god.
And then Karla sighed.
“You know Logan, your mother told me that you were a bit…impulsive and liked to party and that you never listen to them but I never really thought much about it. I have to say that I am disappointed. Why did you not tell me, Logan? I may give you the impression but I am not strict. You could have just told me, you know.” She said, looking sad. Woah! I expected her to hang him or something but this was unexpected.
Logan looked guilty (great acting) and he spoke up, “I am so sorry, Karla. I didn’t know….I am very sorry. I thought you were like my mom, you know, being all strict. I swear, I will never do this again.” he said, giving her his puppy dog eyes look. Ah, so it’s back!
“Okay, Logan. Last warning. If you want to go somewhere, meet your friends or whatever just ask me, okay? It’s just that I promised your mom that I would look after you…If something would have happened to you last night then…Anyways, you are safe and that’s what it matters. Now, both of you, go back.”
That was our cue to get our asses back to the house. We half ran-half walked. Wow! I thought that Karla would look straight through our lie and execute us but what happened just now was unbelievable. Thank you God for saving my life once again.
Once we got back to our house, I let out a breath of relief.
“Thank you, Logan. There was no need to take the blame on yourself but anyways, thanks.” I said.
“What do you mean there was no need? I had to do that or else we would have been royally screwed.” He said. Now, that was correct.
“So, what now?” he asked me.
“What about going to our respective rooms and try not to get in trouble?”
“Sounds good.”
………..
Till 7pm I was asleep until a sound woke me up. God! I have been asleep for more than five hours but then it actually made my headache disappear!
I surfed the net for a while and then I went downstairs to see what was happening. Logan was sitting on the couch watching the repeated telecast of last night’s football match. As usual, Karla was in the kitchen. I sat next to Logan on the couch.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Aww…shit. Come on, man! You could have passed the ball to him!” he replied, staring intently at the T.V. So much for starting a conversation. I sat there silently and watched the match. Hot sweaty guys playing...enjoyable, right?
The advertisement came on and he turned his face to me.
“I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention. What did you say?” he asked.
“Ummm…What’s up?”
“Watching last night’s football and feeling bored. What about you? Is your headache gone?” he asked, looking concerned. I almost smiled.
“Yeah, it’s gone. Much better now.” I replied. He nodded. We couldn't talk much after that as Karla came into the living room and sat down on couch opposite us. She told us that our lunch plus dinner thing is getting ready. Ah! Food at last. She took today’s newspaper and started reading it. As she opened the newspaper, a pamphlet fell out of it. I picked it up and grinned. Perfect.
"Logan, I know what to do about your boredom," I said, trying to contain my excitement.Logan turned to look at me and Karla put down her newspaper.
"Why don't we all go this fair?" They both came closer to look at the pamphlet I was holding.
"Oh, I know about this one. One of my friends was talking about this. She said that her neighborhood was planning it. I think this will be fun. Logan, dear, what about you?" Karla asked. Logan was looking apprehensive. Please don't say no.
"Ahummm...I don't really know? Will it be fun? I mean, the last time I went to a fair was when I was five or six. I need to think about this one..." he replied, uncertainly."Come on, Logan. Don't be such a spoil sport," I said, mimicking what he had said earlier. Logan raised one eyebrow. He knew exactly what I was doing.
"This fair will be amazing! There will be rides, food, 'teenagers' and a lot more. Give it a chance!" I said, silently praying that he would say yes.
He stared at me for a while and then he sighed, giving up. Yeah, baby! I won.
"Okay, fine. I'll come." he said and I wanted to hug the daylights out of him at that point but I controlled myself, of course.
"Great! When should we go?" I glanced at Karla. She was looking at us, amusement in her eyes.
"I think tomorrow? Or the day after? Let's go the day after tomorrow as it is Saturday. Is that okay?"
"It's perfect." I replied, getting all excited.
"Yeah, whatever. Any day is fine." Logan said, turning up the volume of the T.V as the match started again.
I shot a look at Karla. Our eyes said the same thing. Boys.
Yay! So it was decided. We were going to the fair. I started wondering the thing we would do, the things we would eat (of course), the things we would buy etc. I don’t know about Logan but we were going to have so much of fun!
