Oblivious

By @Red_Writer99, America

Isn't it funny how sometimes you search for something, but you can never find it. Then, shortly after going into extreme panic mode, you realize it's been there all along. Love can be a lot like that too. At least it is for Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon.

"Do you ever wonder if there's really someone for everyone," Jane mused.

"I don't know Jane. You've been asking a lot of weird questions since we've started working at the FBI. Now focus on the case," His longtime friend, Teresa Lisbon, responded.

"You never answered my question."

"I don't know Jane, and even if I did it's none of your concern. Work on the case,"

At just that moment Kimball Cho arrived to take Jane with him to interrogate a suspect. "Goodbye Lisbon, we will finish our conversation later," he called.

"No we won't," she whispers in response. Lisbon shakes her head and smiles. That was 'The Great Patrick Jane' for you.

"Hey Cho," Jane said to him as they exited the interrogation, "Do you have a girlfriend?"

"No," Cho responded. Short, sweet, and to the point. Classic Kimball Cho answer.

"Why not?"

"With this job it would be hard to keep a girlfriend. There's too much traveling."

"Oh that sounds reasonable. I was thinking about getting back out on the dating scene. I mean, that whole thing with Krystal was a scam. I'm talking about for real this time." He ran his fingers through his hair and glanced around nervously.

"You're kidding right? That would kill Lisbon."

"What does me dating have anything to do with Lisbon?"

"Oh nothing besides the fact that you're both hopelessly in love with each other. Jesus Jane you two are almost as bad as Rigsby and Van Pelt."

"What are you talking about?"

"Oh c'mon Jane, you two fight like a married couple, the way you stare at each other is repulsive, and she even bought you socks. No one buys someone socks unless it means something or they're stupid. Lisbon is not stupid. You love her. Now deal with it."

That same evening Lisbon is sitting at home alone when her phone lights up signaling that she has received a text message from Jane.

Mind if I come over?

Not at all. She sighs at her response. She gives in too easy when it comes to Patrick Jane. Moments later she ushers Jane in and sits beside him on the sofa. "So what is it that you needed to see me about, Jane?"

"I have feelings for you," he blurts out.

"No"

"Yes"

"No"

"Why not"

"People who have feelings for other people are not constantly leaving. Patrick, I don't want to be left behind again."

"I'm not going anywhere. I care about you, and I promise that I won't be leaving you ever again."

"You know that I can't trust you. You lie all the time, you leave all the time, and you play games all the time. That's not what I want."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want someone who can love me fully. I want someone that I can trust."

"Teresa I do love you! I can be what you want, please just give me another chance."

"I've given you unlimited chances Patrick, look where that got me."

"It got you here with me, confessing my love to you."

"And me turning you down. Go home,"

"I'm not leaving. Maybe it's not about what you want but about what you need. I know that we both need someone that can never be forgotten, someone that can never be replaced. We need someone that will fill the empty spaces in our hearts and teach us how to love again. For me that is you and you alone."

"Jane I," she was silent for a moment while she played with her hands, "need some time. It's not that I don't feel the same. It's that I don't want to get hurt again. Okay?"

"Yeah um that's fine Lisbon. Maybe I should go." He starts to leave, but stops when he reaches the door. "Love you Teresa. Boy would I give anything not to have supposedly forgotten those words years ago." Then he quietly walks out shutting the door behind him.

"Love you too," Lisbon whispers to herself, because those words need to be said, and those are the words that help her realize something. She realizes that she has been so lost all these years. All she needed had just walked away again, and this time she could've stopped it. She sinks down into the couch with her head in her hands. Why is everything so complicated? It doesn't have to be complicated though. Teresa Lisbon jumps up off the couch to chase after Jane before he can get away again. She swings open the door to reveal a flustered Jane. "What are you doing," she asks.

"I was coming back, because I promised never to leave you again. I want to keep my promises, especially to you."

"I love you too." She frantically tugs at his shirt to pull him in for a heated kiss. "We should've done this a long time ago," she says breathlessly.

"Why were we so oblivious?"
