coming up with a title

Coming up with a title for your story can be hard, or it can be easy. For me, titles for my stories come naturally. Usually, I have a title even before I start writing. I think, hey, this would be a good title for a story.

But if you're the opposite, and have trouble with good titles, I'll do my best to help.

So here's a tip: keep it short.

One thing that really bothers me with titles is when the author basically gives away the entire story in it.

I try to keep a two to three word limit on my book titles. But seriously, two or three words is probably the best way to go, since you want the whole title to fit nicely on the cover.

Not only keeping it short, but also something that RELATES to the story. Don't be misleading with your title.

Sometimes it might be best if you start writing your first draft before coming up with a title. The reason I think it's best to come up with a title AFTER you draft is because by the time you finish drafting, you're imagining your story and thinking of special things to add. One of those special things that ties into the story might just be what you choose for the title.

What inspired you to write the story you're writing? Think about that and you may find your book title. A lot of times songs inspire my titles as well.
