We cuddled on the sofa in silence because of this we were able to hear everything around us, from the clock ticking in the kitchen to our own breath. I heard Leanne knock on Jake’s door and then swing it open, it creaked as it opened.
“Jake we need to talk,” she said sternly.
"Mum, get out! I hate you!" he shouted.
Then I heard crashing and banging, as if there was a struggle. I swallowed hard and stood up, breaking free from Rhys’ grip, the noise was becoming unbearable. I walked out of the living room; unsure of where to go or what to do, I didn't want to seem like I was intruding, yet I couldn't remain seated and act like there was nothing going on. I had to do something, anything.
I stood at the bottom of the stairs and looked up; I couldn't see Leanne or Jake. Rhys followed me to the bottom of the stairs.
“What are you doing?” he whispered.
“I just want to see what’s going on,” I replied.
“But-“Rhys started but was interrupted by Leanne shouting.
"Jake, please!" Leanne pleaded.
"Just leave me alone!" he replied.
"You listen to me," Leanne said sternly, the tone in her voice had changed as if she had finally had enough of playing the nice person.
"Mum, get your hands off of me!" Jake called out.
"You listen to me Jake. You are going to go down those stairs and talk to Sapphire. She's distraught because of this, you talk to her in a mature fashion and you apologize for your attitude towards her. She's a scared, pregnant, young girl in need of a friend right now, she needs the support. And you’re being an immature twat towards her," Leanne snarled.
"No," Jake replied bluntly.
Then there was silence for a minute, Leanne didn't speak. Instead there was a scream and then more banging and thuds and more screams and high pitched calls for help.
"Just leave me alone Mum! I asked you nicely; don't make me do something I will regret!" Jake threatened.
"What are you going to do? And asking nicely? You think that was nice? You think that swearing at me is asking nicely? Your father and I brought you up properly" Leanne snapped.
"Yes but where's Dad now?!" Jake cried.
"Away with his new girlfriend," Leanne replied.
"Exactly, he's not here is he?"
"No, I'm afraid not Jake, and he never will be again," Leanne replied.
"Why though?" Jake asked.
"For reasons I've already told you," Leanne answered.
"So the reason is because you didn't love him anymore? Who says you won't do that with me?" Jake asked.
"You are my son Jake!" Leanne protested.
"Yes and he was your husband, my Dad!" Jake shouted.
"Well it's just the way things go," Leanne replied.
Leanne and Jake came into our view; I walked over to the back door to make it look like I wasn't ease dropping on their conversation, although half of it was shouted anyway so it was quite impossible not to hear it.
"I hate you Mum! Why do I even call you 'Mum'?" Jake shouted.
"Don't say that!" Leanne cried.
"Why? It's the truth!" Jake snapped.
