Chapter Four – An Un-expected Visit

Linda jolted from her bed, with panting breaths and a clammy forehead. She looked around. Her room was yet dark. She wiped away the beads of perspiration and blew into her palms, to provide them warmth.

She had been dreaming of her dooms-day. More precisely, she had witnessed a nightmare. Linda saw herself walking down a flowered aisle with much tremor. Alexander had placed her hand into Samuel’s familiar grip. It had been going all too well, until… the priest asked him to kiss her.

Linda raked a hand through her hair and wiped down her face. Was that a glimpse of her supposed wedding day? Even so, a mere trance ascertained it to already be nauseous and horrid.

How could she be betrothed - a sixteen year old walking down an aisle that was meant for two lives to be sealed away?

She plopped back onto her soft pillow and pondered deeply, staring idly at the white ceiling during the late hours of night. Probably, every other person in England was soundly asleep while she was kept awake with a disturbing and difficult future ahead of her.

Linda thought over how her routine would be affected after the event. She sincerely hoped to be allowed her privacy of a secluded room, at-least until she became an adult…

A frowned marred her angelic features.

It seemed wrong in so many ways. What would a childish mind know of wifely responsibilities? Perhaps she ought to behave honourably with Samuel and have him wrapped around her finger. Perhaps then, he would listen to her every word.

She would be allowed to study for two more years, or even more; she would postpone any sort of physical attachment between them as pertaining to a true couple; and she would even convince him to allow her to resume by residing at her home.

A large grin worked its way through Linda’s lips and she stared dreamily upward. How wonderful that would be, if only her whims could become true. Although from the span of a day that Linda had been with him, she knew that deep down – Samuel could appear… nice and… charming, apart from being a likely pervert.

She recalled his seductive smile and the way his eyes lit with burning lust. Linda shivered and shook those thoughts away.

Surely he would let her have her way?

With a deep sigh, she rose and headed for her study table. Linda began to revise; the final exams were due in less than a month, after all.

When the first beams of brilliant sun-rays peeked through the curtain gaps, Linda stopped her revision and basked in the morning glory with a smile. The moment was so tranquil and wholesome. It provided her hopefulness that she would pull through today, in the least.

A while later, after having gotten ready for school, Linda approached the kitchen to have a bite from breakfast and that was when she heard loud, bickering voices. She concealed herself quickly behind an expanse of wall and eavesdropped.

“Mom, you could have given me a prior warning – I would’ve made it home, early!” Henry spoke angrily.

“Or maybe, Mom simply didn’t want us here when it happened. I distinctly recall her sending me to the Grocer’s to purchase a list of items that weren’t there to begin with!” Paul raised his tone. Linda instantly understood the cause for their absence during the arrival of Samuel’s family – Eleanor had formulated her diversion plan, all over again.

“Listen, both of you - I only aim at the best for your sister and should that have meant sending you’ll away for a while, I didn’t object to it. I know all too well that neither of you would’ve let her go, easily. Trust me, she’s in good hands,” Mom reasoned firmly.
