Positives and Negatives
My feet made tracks on the plush rug as I paced back and forth. To think, this insignificant seeming plastic stick that I had just peed on would hold the answer that would change my life forever. I was growing impatient now.
"Come on, come on…" I mumbled over and over.
And then it happened, the white circle warped into a dark blue plus sign. Positive. I gave a shaky sigh and slid down onto the linoleum floor, burying my face in my hands.
What would people say…? I start college soon, oh god I’m gonna be walking into class with baby vomit on my clothes, smelling like diaper ointment! Ok breathe- breathe Ali… Just talk to Andrew and everything will be ok…
I crawled out of my bathroom and realizing that I still had the pregnancy test in hand, I threw it away and wiped away a few nervous tears from my cheek. Grabbing my car keys from the crystal red and orange bowl in the foyer, I went out the front door and hopped into my cream BMW coupe that took me forever to save up for.
As I drove like a mad woman to Andrews's apartment, I kept my breathing steady and thought of ways on how to tell him that I was pregnant. So far I’ve came up with-
“Hey babe, we’ve got a bun in the oven!”
And “Better make those dinner reservations for 3 tonight!”
I put the roof down as to distract me with the sound of bird’s squawking, ocean waves lapping, and the crisp autumn breeze stinging at my face as if it were giving me a pep talk.
I finally reached his apartment and knocked on the door. While I was fixing my chestnut leather jacket, checking the time, and muttering my rehearsed lines of what to tell Andrew, the door opened. I looked up and melted at the sight of my Andrew. Smiling his breathtaking smile, he overwhelmed me and I completely forgot whatever I was worrying about.
His dirty blond hair was longer than usual, tousled to the right and grew a little bit over his ears, his gorgeous green eyes lit up when they saw me, like freshly cut summer grass with dew drops that sparkled, his skin was kissed by the sun after long hours of working hard, which his body displayed by the muscles begging to rip out from under his crisp white t-shirt. What was even better, was that his warm personality matched his beauty.
"Alicia hey, I was about to come over; I planned a surprise for us tonight." He smiled brightly, his innocent eyes were looking at mine with love and adoration.
We've been going out for more than 5 years, but he still has a hold on me.
"Andy, baby, I need to talk to you first its pretty important…"
He must have noticed my expression because he immediately grabbed my hand with a concerned look and said,
"Oh, come in what's up?"
We walked into his dimly lit living room; he took my jacket, and hung it up on the coat rack by the door. I sat down on the black love seat and he sat in front of me on the cream couch. I took in a huge gulp of air and looked into his eyes.
"I-I’m pregnant Andrew." I whispered and looked down.
My heart stopped as I waited for his reply. Everything seemed to go silent and I was afraid to meet his eyes. I felt a warm hand cup my face. Andrew softly drew me closer to him until his musky scent filled my nostrils and I felt soft cotton fabric rub against my cheek. He kissed my forehead and exhaled,
“I don’t even know what to say right now… I’m shocked, but I feel really… happy. I mean, I knew one day we were going to raise a family of our own, so what time is better than now?”
He smiled at me, rubbing his rough hands on my shoulder.
“I’ll always be here for you Alicia; don’t you ever forget it.”
And with that, it was like the whole room lit up and we were kissing. Molding into each other with each blissful move, feeling the static and warmth transferring through us; suddenly he stopped and held my face.
"Remember I said that we were going to do something special tonight?"
“Yeah?” I replied breathlessly.
"Well, I was going to do it during dinner but I just can’t wait, the time seems right."
He knelt down on one knee and took out a tiny midnight blue velvet box from his jean pocket. My heart sped up and I gasped.
"Andrew-"
"Alicia Brook Walker, I love you with all my heart. I’ve wanted to be with you since the day we first met. I never thought I’d ever be good enough to be your boyfriend, but being that I’ve had the best moments of my life and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Not only do I promise to be the best husband ever, but now the best father ever. Will you be my wife?" he opened the box to reveal the most stunning ring I’ve ever seen. The shiny silver band was decorated with it seemed like dozens of miniature diamonds surrounding the sides of one large square cut diamond.
"So, is that shocked look on your face a yes?"
I realized that I hadn't said my answer; I was just staring dumfounded at the beauty of the simple yet completely elegant ring before my eyes. Andrew was looking at me hopefully.
“Oh my god…Yes of course!"
He slipped the ring on my finger and it fit perfectly, like it was meant to be there. When he stood up I gave him a huge kiss that exploded with passion and love and fireworks. We made our way to the bedroom and almost forgot all about our dinner reservations with all of the excitement buzzing through our brains. We ended up staying in and ordering Chinese food, and kissing some more of course.
