Chapter 15
For the past week Carry and Heather had me do everything with them inside of school. They would drag me to the lunch table with them whenever I would try to sit at me old table. Even when we got to go outside during school, which was more than I would have thought for middle school since we didn't get a recess, the two girls would practically drag me by their sides. I knew it wasn't exactly because It was me, but rather so they could ask me questions about my brother.
"So. Brooklynn. Who's that girl Oliver has been hanging around with?" Heather asks as we go through the lunch line.
I turn down the mush the lunch lady tries to put on my tray as I try and think of who she could be talking about. "Which one?"
Carry tries to stifle a laugh as Heather frowns at me. "Um. The blonde?"
"You mean Sarah?" Heather nods at me. "She's just some girl. I don't think they're together or anything."
Heather sighs in relief.
I turn down almost everything in the line. Finally deciding to have a salad and an apple at the end. I don't even bother trying to go to my old table and go with just following them to sit down right away. For once we're one of the first in the group to sit down. Deciding to sit at the very end so I don't get stuck by the Katy girl I don't like, calms my nerves about lunch. I suddenly wish I would've gotten more food since we have so much time. Heather sits down across from me with Carry on my right.
"What about his friend Eric?" Carry asks.
I stop eating and look at her. "What about him?"
Carry rolls her eyes at me, "Is he dating anybody?"
"Oh. No. I don't think so anyways."
I think I might be imagining things, but I believe I see a slight smile on Carry's face. "Does he go to your house a lot?"
"Yeah I guess."
"Well, when's he going to be there next?" she starts to get impatient with my short responses.
"Not sure. Probably this weekend," I say after I swallow a mouth full of salad.
Carry's eyes light up, "Can I come over this weekend?"
"You mean 'we' right?" Heather jumps in.
I look between the two. They haven't wanted to come over since the whole thing with Frank. We never mentioned it, but I'm sure that's the reason why. Considering Heather tries to run into Oliver when ever she can.
"Well?" Carry gets impatient with me again.
"Sure. I'll have to ask my mother first," I give in.
"Yay!" Heather claps her hands excitedly. Carry just rolls her eyes at her.
I would never say it out loud, but I know Oliver would never be interested in Heather. Oliver is to much into how a person physically looks and Heather is on the slightly heavier side. I wouldn't want to hurt the girls feelings though. Plus I'm starting to like not being alone all the time. After all the years of abuse I just shut down to every one and everything around me. My self-esteem and any confidence I ever might have had completely disappeared. I got used to being alone. At first it felt weird being around other people other than the unavoidable like in class. Now at this point I'm finding it rather enjoyable.
Lunch seemed to drag on forever, but the rest of the day went by in a blur. By the time I got home from school I was ready to just collapse onto my bed. I tried to sneak off to my room before I was noticed but it didn't work out to well.
