Chapter 25

The new house was pretty spacious. My room was on the opposite side of the house from my mother's and Frank's. I knew right away that there was a 50/50 chance of that being a good thing or a bad thing. Either it would make Frank forget about me more or it would give him more motivation since he was less likely to be heard in my room. Not that it really ever stopped him when my mother heard him.

Oliver got what he said was the best space in the house. Though, I was never really fond of basements so I highly disagreed.

"How can you even stand to sleep down there?" I asked him.

"I don't stand. I lay down, " Oliver thought he was so funny.

"Haha. But seriously, it's creepy," I shivered.

Oliver rolled his eyes at me, "No it's not you big baby. Basically the whole downstairs is mine! "

"No its not! " I argued, though I know it might as well be true. Mother and Frank would watch tv in the upstairs living room or I their bedroom and I probably wouldn't ever sit by myself in the basement living room. That didn't leave me with very many options. Either I could watch whatever Oliver wanted or I could attempt to endure the company of my mother and Frank. Oliver definitely seemed like the better option. Though chances are he'd mostly be in his room playing video games on his PlayStation. Luckily for me, I loved to read

"Whatever. You'll probably just sit in your room to freaked out to come down by yourself." I couldn't even be mad for him saying it since we both knew it was true.

I've always thought basements were kind of creepy but all it took was for one incident to happen for me to not like them at all.

The thunder woke me with a start. I was sitting straight up in my bed with my heart pounding in my four year old chest. A few seconds later the lighting flashed so bright i could see my yard through my bedroom window in the middle of the night. I ran for my Mom's room hoping to find some comfort in her presence.

I was careful to not wake the man laying next to her when I tried crawling in bed by my mom.

"What are you doing Brooklynn? Go back to your bed, " my mom yawned.

I shook my little head no at her though I'm certain she couldn't see it in the darkness of her room. "I'm scared, " I whispered right before another loud BOOM shook the house.

My mom sighed in defeat, "Alright. But we're going to sleep in the basement so we don't disturb Frank. "

We went to my room to gather my blue comforter and my Minnie mouse pillow off of my Bed before going to the basement. My brother's bedroom was in the basement, but he was such a heavy sleeper we didn't have to worry about waking him. My mom guided me to the old couch and neatly layed my blanket on it.

"I'll be right back," she said while tucking me in.

My eyes widened in fear, "Where are you going? "

"I have to go find a pillow and blanket for myself. I'll be right back, " she reassured me.

I could still hear the storm down in the basement. I tried to listen for my mom's footsteps above me but the rain and thunder drowned out any noise. That is until I heard wings above my head. I heard it's wings just moments before I saw it fly over me. I scream bloody murder for my mom to come back. However my screams only seemed to encourage it to fly back over me, but this time to fly lower.

Quickly I pulled my blanket over my head before making sure there were no openings that would expose me to the large bat. I tried to be silent in hopes that it would leave me alone. After what seemed like a lifetime, but was probably only minutes, I decided to peek and see if the bat was still out there. Slowly i pulled the covers off of my head. I let out a breath i didn't realize I was holding when I didn't see the bat anywhere. I was about to put the blanket completely down when there was another big boom and the bat came out of nowhere and swooped down at me.

The blanket was back over my head faster than a blink of the eye. I layed there silently crying, praying that my mom would come back down soon and rescue me. It was several hours later before I heard the basement door open. By that point I felt like I could hardly breath underneath the now hot blanket.

"Brooklynn are you awake? " I heard my mother question.

I slowly removed the blanket and looked up at her with tears still in my eyes. "Why didn't you come back down? "

She looked guilty for a moment before she responded, "You never came up to find me so I figured you went to sleep. "

I looked my mother straight in the eye and whispered, "there's a Bat in here. "

"A bat couldn't have gotten in here. It's morning, let's go eat breakfast. " She stood there waiting for me to get up. Cautiously I made my way to the stairs. We were about half way up when I saw the bat fly by us. My mother must have seen it too, because she panicked and told me to run upstairs. As soon as we were both safely up she slammed the door behind her.
"Frank!" she yelled. "There's a bat downstairs! "

Frank walked out of the bathroom as my brother opened the basement door. "Get in here and close the door! " mother yelled while grabbing Oliver.

"What? " Oliver seemed annoyed.

I remember that night and morning like it was yesterday. Somehow Frank managed to get the bat by using a tennis racket. I had no incentive to see it and hid in my room when Frank brought it up. That thing used to be the only reason for my nightmares. Up until the point Frank became tge bigger monster anyways.

Ever since then I've hated basements. But could one really blame me? I was a traumatized four year old. So yes, Oliver was right. The basement basically was his. Though my mom would have to go down there to do laundry. I just hoped I didn't have to do my own anytime soon. Then again, I'd take being circled by a bat any day compared to what Frank had in store for my family and me.
