I woke up to blinding white light, my mind hazy. Where was I? I could tell that I was lying down, on a bed. Was I in my room?
I tried to look around, but my vision was blurry and the more I tried to focus, the more my head throbbed. In fact, my entire body was in pain. Trying to sit up only made it worse and I let out a rather loud groan of pain.
"Yuuri!" a familiar voice called my name, its tone laced with surprise and relief.
The pain at the back of my neck was intense as I tried to turn towards the source of the voice. "M-mom..?" My own voice was hoarse and barely audible.
"You're finally awake..." I noticed her voice crack slightly as she held my hand.
I tried to look around again, to figure out where I was but all I saw were my mom's silhuotte and blurry colours of things my mind could not make out. I knew my vision was not very good, but usually I would still be able to make out what things were without my glasses. What was going on?
"I...I need my glasses."
Once she has helped me put my glasses on, I could finally see my mom. Her hair seemed to be a mess, as if she had not bothered to comb it for a few days. Her eyes looked puffy and red, and I could tell that she had not been getting enough sleep. Her lips were pressed into a thin line that trembled ever-so-slightly, as if she was trying to hold back her tears. "Yuuri..." As she said my name, a tear fell down her cheek and she let out an exasperated sigh, squeezing my hand.
"What...happened..?" Looking around the small white room with various medical machinery, I knew I was in the hospital. I tried to search my memory, but I could not seem to remember what had happened before my head started throbbing again. I squeezed my eyes shut in an attempt to ease the pain, but it was a futile attempt.
"Yuuri..! What's wrong??" mom asked, the concern thick in her voice.
"M-My head...it hurts."
"I'll go call for the doctor, I'll be right back." In less than a second, she was already up from the chair she sat in before and let go of my hand. She took a hesitant look back at me before going out the door.
The room felt suddenly cold once she had left. It was cold and lonely, and I was still trying to ease the pain that only seemed to grow at the back of my head. "Ugh..."
I wanted to touch the place that hurt so much, to massage it and reduce the pain, but I just could not seem to move my arms. I was able to feel the warmth from my mom's hands, but I could not move my hands. It felt numb. My entire body hurt so bad, and yet it all felt numb. What was wrong with me? Why couldn't I move at all?
Before I got too lost in my thoughts, the door opened and in came a man in a white lab coat. He was rather muscular, though relatively short, with an emotionless expression and black hair styled in an undercut that did not seem to be suitable for a doctor. Behind him was my mom with her still worried expression and a nurse that immediately came to the side of my bed to check the data shown on the machine's screen.
"Hello, I'm Otabek Altin." His introduction was brief but he gave off an aura of authority even though he seemed rather tense. "Do you know who you are?" he asked when he reached the side of the bed.
I exchanged glances with my mom who stood beside the doctor. She gave me a little nod, urging me to answer the doctor's question. "Katsuki Yuuri, " I replied.
Doctor Altin nodded and referred back to the file in his hand before looking back at me. "Do you remember what had happened?"
I tried to remember what had happened before I ended up in the hospital but my head just hurt even more. "Ugh..."
"Headache?"
I wanted to nod but I could not move my head. "Y-yeah..."
The doctor helped me sit up with the nurse's assistance. I sat on the white hospital bed, leaning against the white pillow that was propped up for comfort.
"Yuuri, can you move your hands?"
I tried moving, but my hand would not budge. I could not even move a finger. "N-no" I stuttered. "I... I can't seem to move anything."
I noticed the tears that started to pool in my mother's eyes as her expression changed into one with a mix of distress and anguish. My heart ached as I watched her hide her face in her hands and turn away from me. The doctor's expression remained emotionless as he studied the information in the file he held. "Your body must still be in shock."
"What...do you mean?" My voice was soft and timid as my heart sunk. Something bad must have happened. Why couldn't I remember anything?
Doctor Altin stared at me in silence for a while, as if contemplating whether to tell me something I should already know about. "You were involved in an accident." For a moment, I could see a hint of sympathy in his eyes but that disappeared as quickly as it came. "A supposedly fatal accident," he added. By then, mom's silent crying had turned into audible sobbing which shattered my heart to pieces. "The impact of your body against the ground after the crash caused a rather severe injury."
I did not know which to feel worse about; the fact that I was involved in an accident, or the sound of my mother's sobbing. But what the doctor said next left me feeling cold and lifeless. And I knew then that my life would never be the same again.
"There's an injury in your spinal cord, causing waist down paralysis."
