"Well... I'm really not sure if you'll get your sight back. It's fifty fifty right now" Genevieve sighed heavily as Dr. Early told her the news. "You need to rest your eyes... we'll keep the bandage on for a while more and remove it in a week." She nodded sadly. "Can I go home?"
There was a pause. "I'm not so sure that's a good idea" Dr. Morton replied "It wouldn't be very safe for you to be alone" "Well what if she stayed with me" Dr. Brackett said coming in just in time to hear Mike's words. He grinned and adjusted his tie.
A sleepy smile crept slowly onto Genevieve's face. She would never stop wanting to listen to her father's voice that she'd been denied so long.
"Uh well I mean that would be ok..." Dr. Morton said kind of confused. "Wouldn't that be a lot with work though Kell?" Dr. Early asked. Kelly stepped over to Genevieve's bedside. She'd fallen asleep. "It's the least I could do" he replied quietly.
Thinking he was referring to the crash they didn't pry.

"One more step" Kelly said as he patiently guided his daughter up the stairs to his third story apartment. She laughed "It's like some kind of blindfolded game... only I don't win anything"
He looked at her guiltily as he said "I'm sorry Christine. I really didn't know the elevators were being repaired." She paused and tilted her head as the doctor continued to support her.
"No one's... called me Christine in years..." Dr. Brackett wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. His daughter had grown into a very mysterious personality.
In a way it reminded him of her mother. Genevieve herself reminded him of Evelyn only she had a better soul than her mother. Genevieve was rarely ever jealous or demanding or angry. Yet the resemblance between the two was remarkable... especially in their eyes.
"Hold on" Dr. Brackett said letting Genevieve lean against the wall "I've got to-" "unlock the door?" She finished amused. He suddenly realized that she could probably hear or at least guess everything he was doing and how annoyed he would be if someone did that to him.
She's certainly your daughter Kelly! Genevieve heard the jiggle of keys as she leaned against the hard bumpy walls.
She tried to guess what the apartment would be like and for some reason she pictured floor covered in short light gray carpet and creamy walls. You could see the small kitchen from a plain tan couch in the living room. Along a hallway were three bedrooms. Genevieve saw it so clearly she just knew that that had to be they way things were!
Kelly walked her over to the couch and took off his coat as she sat. Well It felt the same. "What color is the apartment?" Ginger asked excitedly.
Dr. Brackett glanced around at the gray walls and red suede furniture. Splashes of brown had added from horse paintings, shelves and his old saddle next to the sliding doors for the balcony. The floor was long plush carpet.
"Hmmm gray for the most part. Red... brown... black. Depends on where you look" "oh" Genevieve replied trying to hide her disappointment. What was that other place? I know I've seen it before!
The doctor took off his shoes and shuffled into the kitchen with a wide yawn. It must have been louder than he thought because Ginger chuckled. "You work too hard" he laughed "You sound like Dixie" "Good. I like Dixie."
Genevieve looked uncomfortable and lost on the couch. She looked... small. Vulnerable. "Why don't you get some sleep. Take the bed I'll sleep on the couch" "Oh but daddy I don't want to put you on th-" "Ah ah ah! My house my rules" She just nodded gratefully and stood slowly trying to find where her sense of balance had gone.
"Need some help?" "No no no. I got it" Ginger felt her way around the glass coffee table and to the kitchen counter. Kelly felt certain that she could find things ok and turned around to start washing dishes.
All of the sudden there was a thud and a yelp of pain from behind him. The doctor whipped around slinging water everywhere and dashed to the hallway. His daughter was lying in the hallway because of where a tear was in the carpet.
It was something he never thought much of; that tear. He never thought a glass table dangerous. A blanket on the ground. Stairs. Now everything was a hazard and another wave of guilt twisted his stomach and his heart together. Why her? Why her eyes?
He sat quickly and scooped Genevieve into his arms. She sobbed as pain shot up through her sore bandaged ribs and her head. She just wished it wasn't so dark. Wished that her world might not crumble but it was looking to be worse than before. Now reality was setting in. It wasn't just a bad dream anymore.
They sat like that into the long hours of the night until Genevieve's sobs turned into angelic peaceful sleep. But Kelly stayed up. He watched her side rise and fall in deep gentle breaths. "I won't ever let anything happen to you again. Not as long as I live. No one will take you away from me again."
